Each NGG16 batch was different:
1st batch: 1937 (86-88): Built by J. Cockerill in Belgium as an improvement to the NGG13s
2nd batch: 1939 (109-116): Built by B.P., similar design to the Cockerill Garratts.
3rd batch: 1951 (125-131): B.P. Welded tanks instead of rivets.
4th batch: 1958 (137-143): Same as before, except coal only in the rear bunker, and flat topped front tank (rounded before). Meant for Tsumeb Copper Corp in S.W. Africa. Last steam locos by B.P.
Last batch: 1965 (149-156). Same as the 1958 batch, except with the 1951 design of rear bunker (coal/water). 156 is the last Garratt built, and along with 3 others, is DANGEROUSLY close to being scrapped.
All the best.

With no windows to the rear of the cab doors, surely it is smaller?

I believe the pipe bottom right is the connection to the rear water tank but, as you said, maybe this was a later modification.

This came from one of Phil Girdlestones articles on the NGG16s (he was one the CME of the Alfred County Railway).
In another article, he wrote about the overhaul of 138 and 143 at ACR, he did mention that they had new tanks made, and they made several "upgrades" to them that "brought them up to the standard of the NGG16As", so maybe they did change the bunker arrangements, I'll have to check no. 140s tank when I get up there! ;)
All the best.

Seven  locos, No 137 - 140,  where initially build for the Tsumeb Corp'n and not for SAR/SAS.

The rear bunker can take 6 tons of coal and no water where < 137 store 4 tons coal and 540 Gals water. The Tsumeb locos needed an NG-X-8 tank wagon 3.200 gals of water to be hauled.

On topic: my NGG16 needs rebuilding which will start in 2012 when time permits.

Is yours suffering from Garratt syndrome then?
Runs like a treat (even if it is an NGG16).

The bunker in the picture is from 143. Both 138 and 143 had a water tank under the coal bunker when I used to drive them on the WHR.

Compared to 138 I've found the cab of 87 slightly larger, I think it's either the cab goes ever so slightly further back or the boiler doesn't protrude into the cab as much, or it may just be a strange illusion somehow!

Had a discussion with my father earlier (an aerospace engineer) and he suggested a significant increase in the bore MAY help.

If your actually refering to checking 140's bunker/tank, you'll struggle, because it's been scrapped.

Had the Garratt running light engine after modification (the LVLR is being completely rebuilt and isnt a full circuit yet).
I'll make a Youtube video of the Garratt running on another members garden railway.
Cheers for the advice. :)

That is excellent news! We can only wonder why somebody, somewhere decided that fitting the exhaust pipe was a good idea.
