I remember going down to Codnor Park Junction to see one of those (with extra power cars) en route to the Settle & Carlisle when it was "at risk" - now THAT deserved an award for bravery!
I see the LEV was also running....................

Strange that the 'Thumper' has attracted more comments than Matt's L&MVLR 'R. B. Earle'
And as for RB004, at times it was only just running! According to one of the patrons of the group who look after it, it was built, never run-in and then stood for 20 years: now it is being used, all the faults are starting to become apparent.
It will now be at the MRT for a while.

I think there was only one like RB004.
Well, unless you include all the 5-inch gauge models, including mine

Theres another LEV at NNR - the infamous LEV1 its now in running order, and the NRM who owns it has finally given us permission to paint the under frame i believe.
Although of course LEV1 is much more ugly than RB004

And STILL no comments about the L&MVLR loco!
Are my pictures that bad?

(although I suppose somebody would have said if they were

)
Or is beauty in the eye of the beer-holder?

I'm not normally interested in photos of 'modern' traction but I like those ones!

That said 1 pacer should be preserved, as a warning!

Hate to say it... but with the change of job I've got... I (will) end up working on 142/3's, 150/1 & /2's 153s and maybe the odd 158! Ohhh the joys:)

I thought the same, and said so to a friend at school (this was many many moons ago). He agreed with reservations pointing out a couple of very pertinent facts. He lived near Cattal, on the Harrogate loop where those things had just been introduced. First, the first gen units they'd had before were on there very last legs and hadn't been brilliant to start with. Second, Maggie's government didn't like trains and railways, especially unprofitable ones, and only with the greatest reluctance did it allow BR to spend it's own money on the provincial sector. There was no money for shiny new "proper" DMUs, so Leyland Nationals were the only option. We could have had them on parcel van chassis..............or on rubber tyres with numberplates front and rear. Yes, they're a very inferior sort of train but a **** sight better than no trains at all. Whatever else they may have done, they did at least keep some lines open we might well have otherwise lost.

Rich,
Ive done the Irish one a few years ago.
For the rest of you there were 5 prototypes built and guess how many are still around.....
http://www.traintesting.com/LEVs.htm
To be honest they did the job on what they were designed to do, kept lines open on the penny pinching tory rail budget. My dad always said if they had been built as articulated units on 3 bogies they would have been a much better idea, but at alot more £££. Though Im sure give the choiche there would have just been a very large fleet of 151's playing on the big railway now.

Matt what a stunning job u have done and I congratulate you being quick on the ball with your research on the L and M. They did shift some milk up that line and I guess it finished up making a very good cheese Gromit!
