It is possible that everyone knows about this anyway or that there are better sound systems available but I have recently bought a petrol engine and a diesel engine sound systems from the following supplier:

They have a recording of these on their site and the clatter of the petrol engine starting up is very realistic. They are made for the model marine market and are therefore somewhat largish but I would think that if enough interest was shown then perhaps a smaller system suitable for trains could be produced. They make a steam sound system as well but this is the sound of a marine engine and does not fit in at all.

Rather than use synthetic sounds, why not use the real thing?
