mmmmmmmm that Conway is lovely. And that Hawthorn Leslie would be nice, I'd love one to do up as one of the ones that ran at the Falmouth Docks line.

I like the conway a lot- I always think they look better with a taller cab as an over scale baby!

I don't like the Conway's with cabs like that because it always strikes me asthough they're trying to turn a NG design in to a SG design by just the chageing of cab and chimney.

Boiler Certificates

Post by John Richards » Tue Nov 17, 2009 9:22 am

Evening Gentlemen,
To cut to the chase, You can sell or buy a Live Steam Loco` without
a "Certificate" for the Boiler, But, I certainly advise against the practice, you cannot run at Public Exhibitions, and will find it hard
to get Insurerance for the Beast!.
As for getting a Boiler Certified, you approach a Model Boiler Maker
to do the job for you!.
He will give your Boiler a Hydrostatic Test TWICE, to double the
pressure you wish to run at, then a Steaming Test, Then a Safety
Valve Steam Test, If he cannot see the Thickness of the material
use too construct the Boiler, he is in his rights to drill a hole in it
to assertain the Copper Thickness used in construction!.
{this he will Silver Solder afterwards} :D
If the Boiler is not built of Copper, Dont Bother!. :(

Hope this is some help!.

John.

I realise thise is an old thread but perhaps someone has had some first hand experience with an "Alice" in the mean time? A google search has not revealed much about ownership of one.

I know I can get a Sweet Pea for similar (or less) money but the problem with the Sweep Pea is that is is too heavy for one person to carry. I've owned one so I know this for certain.

I really like the quarry Hunslets so the Alice does look like an attractive proposition in my opinion. As long as it will pull me and my daughter I'm happy.

I have seen one at chesterfield DMES, Didnt talk to the owner but it was pulling 5 people round the track and there is a fair gradient on their line. It was buzzing round the line all day.

They're about 1/2 the weight of a Sweet Pea, I still wouldn't want to be lifting one by myself though.

30 kg is not a problem. I occasionally lifted the Sweet Pea on my own although it was not a pleasant experience!

I'm very tempted to buy one as "compensation" for the military vehicles I have to sell. I'm moving to Germany 4 weeks from now and have to give up my MV hobby

There are some good steamups to go to in nearby Holland and Belgium.
