I don't think Salem Steam Models exists anymore. A few years ago I read that Locobox had taken over production of the Salem Garrat.

Judging by the Salem 0-4-0 I have, their locos were robustly built. The rivet detail is very neat, but there is not a lot of detail on the loco.

I don't know if Locobox still do them, I have tried to get to their website, but only get a page that says somthing to the effect of "Welcome to the Locobox website, please click on the links below", all there is is 2 advertising banners, and I can't get any further... That happens when I get to it from a US dealer, but if I try clicking on the same URL from a Google search, I get a message from Internet explorer that the page cannot be shown. Strange !

When the Salem Garratt was taken over by Locobox, it was run by Ross. Ross's father or father in law (i can't remember which) started the company & designed the Garratt.
Before Ross passed everything to Locobox, Ross & Locobox started to colaborate & work together.
Unfortunatly, the situation didn't work out (not an uncommon situation with Locobox...) & Ross packed it all in.

I'm not sure how many Garratts of the Salem type Locobox made, i only know of one (which sadly has never run properly since the day it was built), but there may be more.

Salem did used to produce the Garratt as a kit as well of which i have the last two ever produced by Ross (sorry, the answer is no, before you ask... ) & he made 3 of the kits as an 0-6-0 0-6-0 wheel arrangement (of which my 2 are) as opposed to the standard 0-4-0 0-4-0.

Bearing in mind that the original design is a bit dated by todays standards - you either seem to get a good one or a bad one!

It still is possible to pick up a secondhand one, but normally because it wont run!

Also bear in mind that they have the running style of a Mamod (nothing wrong with that) - it tends to be a bit of a greyhound...

Chris.

DAM my plans foiled

Seriosly though. If you ever see a Garrat for sale (eg in the 16mm garrat newlsetter) or sell one yourself could you please tell me as i may be interested ;)
