Kittiwake's lining

Post by laalratty » Thu Dec 24, 2009 9:12 pm

Today I completed the lining scheme on SLRmidge's Accucraft Wrekin, following its appearance on ANLR Santa Special duty in semi complete state. The lining is from Garden Railway Specilists, and is in the form of waterslide transfers. This comes with 6 long lines, and a large number of corner pieces. I also applied new "Silverdale Light Railway" crests on the cabsides, as the old ones were looking tired. SLRmidge got these from GRS as well as far as I know, not sure how he went about getting the artwork drawn up though, but there is usually a crest on every SLR (north) loco and carriage. After applying the transfers (GRS expects you to know how to do this since no instructions are provided!) I covered the lines and crests in varnish to provide some protection from the rough and tumble of being one of SLRmidge's locos. Anyway, enough dribble from me, here is the works pic...

I think the lining has improved it greatly, making it look a lot less plain :)

It looks smashing, and a lot better than plain maroon as it used to be.

BTW, if it's a works photo why isn't the loco in grey and the background whited out?

Call me an anorak, I don't care...

Yes that is it. What I do is fill a dish with water, cut out the line (or whatever it is), and place it printed side up in the water, and leave for a few seconds

That's a very pretty Wrekin. The Accy locos look very mundane ex works but that's excellent, and the lining finishes it off nicely- looks very well done too. Much better than trimline.

You gonna tell us how you did it then/ do you take commissions? ;)

Oh aye, that grand lieke! Looks really nice, looks near to what Lightline can do!

For those wanting lining on Edrigs, you can use Trimline, you can get different colours and it comes on a roll with different sizes on it.

I lined my Edrig out in it. I went for a minimalist approach, and I may do some proper lining to it someday with paint, like Laalratty did with his Lady Ann, but Trimline can produce some good results.

I should have used a bit thicker line, and further in from the edges...

Trimline looks excellent for a quick cheap and easy solution. Looks spot on if done with care until you sit it next to something like Kittiwake- but chances are, you won't.
Yes, mundane = dull = plain, you can't deny that they are a bit boring with just a nameplate plonked on the side or even more so ex works. Not sure if I'll be lining mine and I won't be naming it but it'll be weathered, lettered and numbered.

It is brush varnish, it dosn't give the greatest finish, but it does improve with a few heat cycles, and also applies easily without the fuss of setting up a spray booth etc

What are you planning on replacing it with? Generally I much prefer a satin finish to the high gloss most loco's are finished in, far more realistic for a working engine.
