could someone please tell me where the exhaust is on a simplex

That depends very much on what type of simplex.

They can be in vairous places depending on the type..
Out the top as on Ayala my friends simplex
Or annother is along the side of the engine pointing down and hardly visible as on another friends.

I think they were cross ways accross the bonnet. Any place were it would get the exhaust out of peoples way would be sort of prototypical though.

Older ones had a cylindrical silencer alongside the radiator: later ones had it coming up vertically next to the cab - makes the cab very noisy!

Fit it where ever you want, but use it to disguise the on/off switch??...Fwd/Revs switch can be in the cab, soft push on/off hidden inside somewhere and glue the exhaust to it.

No. 27 at Amberley has the exhaust sticking out from underneath the bonnet, pointing outward and down next to the cab opening.
