The answer depends what situation you are in. If your line has steep gradients or shap curves then RC is the way forward. It is also an advantage when visiting other lines, esecially the fist time. However there is nothing better than setting a manual loco going and just sitting back and relaxing on a warm summer evening

I voted for r/c but as mentioned it depends on the scenario and the locomotive. I wouldn't even consider fitting radio control to a geared locomotive for example, as it would totally ruin the character and attraction of the loco. As I like to "drive" locomotives, including shunting, station stops and going up hill and down dale, my personal choice is for radio control and a normal loco as opposed to a geared one, but I can certainly see the appeal of running a manual loco on a large relatively flat circuit.

Generally that means it wasn't fitted very well in the first place... Certainly a modern system, properly fitted, should work fine.Matt wrote:I'm not too sure, I've meet several people who have taken RC off their loco's because it's too problematic with them.

quite true Pete! I like manual locos alot. Then again Pete didn't let me have a go with the R/C controller so I havn't tried out R/C. I would find R/C far more appealing if the controller were more suitable for a steam locomotive ie. with more suitable controles such as regulator and reverser rather than two sticks or a racing car wheel type! I really like to be the driver on the locos and my line is perfectly flat (yay shelves) so manual is good for me!
The railway which people forgot
(to build)
I don't have a preference, I find it extremely satisfying to get the regulator set just right so that the train goes round at an ok speed with a manual loco, but find running after manual locos on lines with gradients over 1 in 70 "fun" shall we say! Driving the locos with radio is also a great experiance, but only if the line has grades, if it dosn't it becomes boring and manaual is much better.
Overall I would say if you have 2 or more locos, have at least one radio and one manual to cover all eventualities (unless your line needs radio control), I have 2 of each.

Who are you calling Nancy, you are the one who went in when it rained! Living where you do it's amazing you ever get to run trains if you wimp out when it rains...
