TDS Meter

Post by gilfachphil » Tue Oct 14, 2025 11:16 am

Two of my live steam locos bought second hand have the Roundhouse water gauge and both were somewhat obscure from previous use, descaling is a route I am following though need a new gasket for my Silver Lady as there is a small leak after the use of white vinegar for a short time and a mechanical cleaning would probably be more effective anyway.

This got me to wondering about the quality of the water I am using so for £4 I invested in a TDS meter from the well known auction site:-

it came yesterday so I tested my tap water, which is quite soft. Reading 84ppm
Rain water in the top of the water butt. Reading 34ppm
'Distilled' water from a dehumidifier. Reading 11ppm

So now I have a comparison between three possible of sources.

The last of the three seems least likely to block the tubes.
