Llangollen GR Show

Post by ge_rik » Sat Jun 07, 2025 2:45 pm

I went along this morning. Plenty of traders and some great layouts. I was surprised it didn't seem to be as well attended as my previous visit (two years ago).

Bought a couple of books - one a reprint of the Hunslet narrow gauge loco catalogue and another "The Anatomy of s Garratt" which is a wonderful booklet all about the K1 Garratt with detailed drawings. Really tempting to develop the little-known K1a Garratt - a three foot gauge version.

Also bought some very fine (in both senses) paint brushes for painting figures. At £10 for twenty brushes, it seemed like too good a bargain to miss. No excuse now for not finishing that latest batch of 3D printed figures of my Am Dram friends in 1930s garb.

Sorry I missed seeing you Rik! I bought some things as well, including a 45mm gauge J70-style tram in GER colours (including a face which I didn't notice until the end of the show  )

I wonder if more people were aware of 'upstairs' this year, so 'downstairs' seemed less crowded?

I was going to say we did not do quite as well as last year, but whilst I was performing open-electronic surgery, on a DMU, one prospective customer decided we were too busy, but phoned through an order today..

That has taken us to a little more than last year. - But we will still be 'down', as accommodation costs (especially food) have increased.

We must have got something right, as we have only ended up with three orders, for things we had run out of. - They will all be in the post by Wednesday, barring any last minute hitches.

Glad to hear you're buoyant. I did wonder if you would take a hit when Deltang ceased production but, fortunately, Andy (Mr Micron) has taken up the baton and his kit has filled the gap.

PS Just noticed the mixed metaphors in the last sentence - but I think you get the gist

I got badly 'burnt' when Deltang ceased..
Had been told one thing, but supplies dried up a lot quicker, and David was not the best at communication.

Development of the new products, took longer than any of us would have liked.

Shows are hard work, but you do 'a month in a day', so it is definitely worth it.
Getting the level of stock right, is the problem.. Stoneleigh was massive (and manic) with a lot of orders taken. This puts pressure on for the next month, or so. - You have those to fill, and 'extra' enquiries and orders from those who looked and learned, at the show.

We have a bit of a break, then we will set up a stall at the BGRA summer show, Butterley. - I think this will be pretty low-key?
Then Llanfair. - No idea how that will pan-out.
I have been invited to Exeter for several years, so we are trekking down there, and end of year, we will see our friends at Steam in Beds.

Twenty brushes? Either you’re planning a masterpiece or you’re finally accepting that miniatures eat brushes for breakfast
