Ugly locomotives
Re: Marc Horovitz is Wrong. (IMO)
I was going to say that this looked very much like a Peter Butler project and then noticed it was you who posted it.
I think you might have needed to wallpaper it rather than trying to paint that livery, Peter.

Somewhere I have seen a colour illustration of that loco, so in theory it might be possible to copy and print 'wallpaper'? I still think it is a step too far to build one, and besides that, my Viceroy has retired!

Wonderful news that the loco survives today, I have read the article and will do more research on it now, so thank you for the information!
I still have doubts it will make an appearance in model form, but it is a definite maybe.

Three of these distinctive 2-2-4 locomotives were built in the late 1850s and early 1860s by Robert Stephenson & Co in Newcastle, each with a luxurious saloon mounted behind the footplate. According to a contemporary issue of the Newcastle Courant, “The exterior of the train is decorated with arabesque designs of black, white and gold, in the first style of art, from the designs of Mr Digby Wyatt”. One of them, known as the Pasha's train, can be admired today in the railway museum in Cairo.

Re: Marc Horovitz is Wrong. (IMO)
There are some magnificent beasts there but finding a way to narrow gauge them to 2ft. might be a problem. Perhaps that's why I haven't tried before?

Re: Marc Horovitz is Wrong. (IMO)
I guess that's sort of a secondary boiler on the top?

Re: Marc Horovitz is Wrong. (IMO)
My guess is it's some kind of feedwater heater. If so, it's the biggest one I've ever seen.
Re: Marc Horovitz is Wrong. (IMO)
OK - This gives a whole different meaning to "Tank Locomotive"

Yeah........... except it's not real. Definitely photoshopped.

Re: Marc Horovitz is Wrong. (IMO)
Not yet, anyways... I think I left those tank treads around here somewhere...

This one is definitely not photoshopped, therefore must be real...

Of course you would Peter.

Don't suppose Marc would approve of this one:

Re: Ugly locomotives
I just realized that this is actually putting the boiler in the same situation it would be in on a cog railway loco without an angled boiler... seriously, what kind of nut came up with this?drewzero1 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2023 4:51 am On the thread where I found it, someone suggested it was indeed to improve draft, and also that it was an odd feature on something that wasn't a rack loco. I have seen a particular make of traction engines use the same kind of slanted boiler, can't remember which it was though.

Re: Ugly locomotives
We might have mentioned this one here,
The Wisconsin connection is interesting (some were manufactured under license here). I have some ancestors who worked in logging around that time, wonder if they ever worked with these?
