UV curing glue

Post by gregh » Thu Sep 26, 2024 11:17 pm

I can across a video where UV curing glue was used. I've never heard of it. Has anybody used it?
Seems to come in a container 'pen' that includes the UV light. Pretty expensive, but maybe has its niche uses. Especially as it supposedly lasts forever and doesn't go off in the container.
(also reminds me of visits to the dentist :( )

I have used the Bondic stuff, but it was around ten years ago before I really had opinions on glues  I seem to remember it being similar to a gel super glue, without the risk of sticking fingers together. I don't think I still have any of the things I fixed with it though. I stopped using it around the time I discovered two-part epoxy.

I used a version years ago and it worked well it was a bit fiddly and the pieces had to be supported to stop movement while curing.
Also the UV has to get at all the glue to cure it if it can't then the glue doesn't set and the joint fails.
After looking at the video I might have to take look at it as I am looking for something to glue 3D filament, superglue is not working for me and I am using 5 minute epoxy which is a bit messy.

Speaking of dentist my daughter broke a front tooth when she was about 10 and they glued the 2 pieces together using a UV cured adhesive and it is still holding 25 years later.

We use UV curing glue for bonding lenses into cameras and other optical assemblies. Just be careful that using the curing tool around some plastics will render those plastics brittle. As well, you want to make sure you're wearing protective eyewear when working with it as it will induce cataracts over time if not careful.

I guess it depends on the glue, but ours only partially cures under UV light, and then requires baking in an oven to fully cure.
