Blog, Pictures, and Videos
Blog, Pictures, and Videos
Hello everybody..
After reading the notice about storage limitations, it has given me the kick to think about where/how I keep things..
I am after suggestions as to where to create a Blog, store Pictures (for use in various forums) and Videos. - Should I actually video anything of worth.
I assume YouTube for video? - Any 'gotchas', cost-implications, to this?
A Blog. - Has to be simple, else I won't bother.
Picture-storage (for use online).. - I already have a Google 'account' so believe I have some storage with this?
Then there is the elephant on the Internet. - FacileBook..
It is becoming more than obvious, that I am probably going to have to create an account on this? - It would be useful, to have access to the 16mm group, and to be able to view certain things, without the limitations.
I am after the thoughts/suggestions of the Forums hive-mind..
Many thanks,
Phil.P

Re: Blog, Pictures, and Videos
No gotchas with YouTube, free as you have a Google account, easiest way of doing video's IMHO.
I will leave the rest to others.

I use Wordpress for blogging and would recommend it. You can start a Wordpress blog for free on wordpress.com (the software itself is open source so lots of people - like me - host it themselves, but using wordpress.com is simpler). I think it's easy to use, but that might be because I've been using it for almost 20 years! I think others here use it too... if so, it might even be worth starting a thread for sharing tips and ideas with each other.
I'm more niche when it comes to video and photo hosting (Piwigo, Pixelfed, Peertube etc.) so I wouldn't necessarily recommend those as easy to use. I like to have some control so as to avoid the "Photobucket effect" but there's a cost to that, not just money but time that could otherwise have been spent on railway modelling...

Re: Blog, Pictures, and Videos
I've been using Blogger for nearly 20 years. It's (now) hosted by Google and is free (unless you don't like Google) and so is seamless when uploading photos and linking to videos on YouTube (or you can upload videos directly to your blog). I ran out of my storage capacity for photos after about 12 years, so now pay an annual fee for the extra storage (can't remember how much but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than Microsoft).
The interface is dead easy to use but is limited in what you can do - but that hasn't really been an issue for me - I like the KISS principle.

PS - I hate FB. So difficult to re-find things you've seen, even only the day before. It's designed for a "seen today, gone tomorrow" philsophy. I rarely look at it and get very irritated by posts like "xxx is now in yyyy restaurant" or "here's photos of me getting rat-arsed at zzzz's hen night" .....

Thank you Gentlemen!
Much to think about..
I am a bit of a luddite, but it looks like YouTube is a 'yes', and I need to have a look at the others..
Just need to find the time to make a start, and organise some content..

A video?
Not very exciting..

Thanks Rik..
I might be dragging myself (kicking and screaming) into, at least, the 20th century.

(Just need to check how secure the folder is)

Re: Blog, Pictures, and Videos
Thanks..
I had the devil of a job finding a video..
It is a 'leaf-blower' for track clearing duties. Hence the reference to needing a loco behind it..
An old SLA battery, a cast-off tender, and a 'bilge-blower' fan..
The battery was pretty flat, else it would have blown itself round the bend, and off the end of the track!

Re: Blog, Pictures, and Videos
I have noted the link to a YouTube video, of editing YouTube videos, on. Errrrrrr, ah yes, YouTube...
Thanks Rik.
Now I need to play with the Smartie-Phone (as with many things, Dad took his video camera apart) and I think the battery has seen better days?
It is quite compact, but I think a little (gorilla?) tripod, and perhaps a Bluetooth(?) remote to start/stop recording....
Turn the Smartie-Phone sideways (I assume) for better aspect ratio..
But first, another coffee, and count the stock back in from Llangollen..
Perhaps the first faltering steps, by the end of the week?

Re: Blog, Pictures, and Videos
Depending which variety of smartiephone you have, there is an iphone app which automatically takes landscape video's & pictures, no matter which way up you hold the phone, or even at an angle.
It is called "Horizon" on the Apple App Store. I believe there is an Android version but I have no experience of it.
