Weatherproof G scale point motors

Post by Sussexdave » Mon Apr 17, 2023 12:26 pm

I’m currently carry out maintenance on my 5 year old garden layout. The layout includes 6 point motors and I originally used LGB motors. On examination, the steel magnetic pole pieces are badly corroded.
I am contemplating replacing the worst of them and I would appreciate any comments/ experience of others using the Piko ‘weatherproof’ product.

Thanks in advance

Hi Dave
Welcome to the forum

I haven't any experience with Piko motors , I'm afraid, but most of my LGB point motors have been outside in situ for around seventeen years. Like yours, their pole pieces are very rusty but they still keep soldiering on. The only failures I've had ( two out of eight motors ) have been corrosion of the soldered joint between the end of the coils and the brass screw connectors. I've repaired these a couple of times but eventually there isn't enough tail on the innermost shellacked coil wire to reach the connector and so I had to abandon them. I have kept the old motors as spares. One day, I might get around to rewiring their coils.
