Time to build a railway...but where?
Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
That would be very nice, at 12" to the foot, in my back garden..
Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Lovely!
It's got a cricket pavilion vibe - which is how one of the Ashover carriages came to be preserved, I think?

I had to look at that a few times to work out if it was a scale model or the real. From the back with the wooden blocks I was pretty sure it was full size for a moment there! Great work

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
One of the delights of garden railway modelling is the social aspect. Here in West Wales we are well supported by several good friends who have formed the 'South West Wales 16mm Association Local Area Group', who, due to unfortunate circumstances, haven't met in number for a long time. Finally that opportunity arose yesterday and we all took advantage of the fine weather and a chance to visit a member's garden railway.
My personal preference is not to just run trains, but to create a realistic landscape for them to operate. The line we were met with certainly does that and raises the bar of realism to a new, and extremely high level. I am in awe of the work which has been achieved there during lockdown.
We all have different opinions about our railway expectations and how we use them, but this is such a leap forward in scenic design I just had to share it with you....

Wow! That looks amazing. That looks for all the world like a real slate quarry face in the background. Lovely concrete structures which will meld in beautifully with time.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Peter, where in these fine 189 pages would I find a story about the viaduct and the small culvert's construction ?
Nice work and inspiring us to get back to the POR extension when I get the current loco build completed.

Dazza, if only it was part of my garden railway, I would be a very happy man! Unfortunately it isn't my work at all, but part of a local 16mm Association member's work on his own railway, which we were invited to visit (as explained in my post of Feb 27th).

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Well, what have I been doing since my last post on this thread on March 28th? Firstly, far too many visits to the local hospital to undergo tests for all sorts of things in so many parts of me. They have been sloshing about in all locations, watching their activities on TV screens and commenting on their progress. I'm very familiar with much of the internal workings now. So far I seem to have no bad results other than confirmation of my reaching (or exceeding) my sell-by date. The tongue biopsy (not to be recommended) has proved negative, so time to get back to work!
I have been building a few items but the only one nearing completion is based on another 1970's novelty car radio...
I like to remove the road wheels and rear end and use the front as I did on the 'double-bus' a while back. A new theme developed around this one for something completely different... never done that before!!!
I spent quite some time just looking at this and trying to make it all convincing(ish), eventually it evolved and I am satisfied with it...
I'm sure it is easily identifiable by now, more to follow.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Glad to hear that your bi-ops all came back with good news Peter. I was going to email you today to see how you were getting on.
Love the new build, your imagination hasn't any signs of disappearing either mate. What a brilliant build you are doing from that vintage car. You have worked wonders on it so far. Cant wait to see it run on your line.

Glad to hear the good news about the test results. Awaiting the results is almost as bad as having the tests themselves....
Fire engine?

Sorry you've been under the weather Peter, but glad the test results are OK... If your local hospital is the one in Carmarthen, I've been there once, when my Grandpa had a heart attack in a Welsh field in 1993. I combined being a good grandson with a ride on the Gwili Railway, of course...

I thought things had been quiet at the BURPS, but I'm glad you are able to get back to some sort of normality.
Like Rik, I think I-spy the body of a fire engine - looks distinctly like an escape ladder cradle behind the seats. But will it be rail based, or a road vehicle?
I wait with bated breath

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Thank you guys, I am most grateful for your concern and comments.
The build continues and this is the situation with the model in primer... always a satisfying stage to see whether it is going to look balanced...
The next step was to source suitable figures. I turned to David Clavey (of this Forum) and bought two of his seated drivers. These are cast resin, therefore suitable for surgery by using my mini sanding table and files. They were supplied with four separate heads, all different, which can be attached as required. The heads had various caps which needed sanding down to their skulls so that new headwear could be modelled using Milliput.
They also needed new greatcoats for added protection...
As can be seen, one of the figures had to undergo amputation of his right arm, but it was successfully re-attached in a slightly different position to make the two look more individual.
