Spirit vs gas

I was reading an old issue of "16 mm Today" and I found an article about converting a gas-burner Roundhouse Millie to a spirit-burner. And I started wondering why? What are the pro's of a spirit burner vs gas? (My only experience is with gas).

I've no idea about the technical merits of spirit-firing, but it's silent, which is nice. I like the smell too...

Derailments can be spectacular though - and melt your plastic-sleepered track!

Spirit is easy to store and fill. No pressure on the tank, no matter if cold or warm, leaks are spotted easily.

Another point to consider is that meths firing is a better option in cold weather as it doesn't need to be in gaseous form & under pressure.

The only thing missing here is that you can put a meths/spirit/ethanol fire out with water. When it is diluted it can no longer burn - that could be a useful advantage!
