Burst lumbricator seal.

On one of my mamods, I've got a large lumbricator which has a seal on the screw to fully seal the lumbricator. This has burst, and every time I steam the mamod up, a mixture of steam and hot oil comes out of a small gap in the seal.

What can I do to mend it?

Is this on the top cap, or the drainer?

The top cap. Because of it, all the steam escapes and the engine can't even pull itself round my line.

You could try making somthing out of leather with scissors, or contact the supplier of the lubricator, regarding spares.

Is it just an 'O' ring like they normally are?

If so, just get one from your local ironmongers...

Yeah, its an O ring seal. The lumbricator is the same type as that on simon sparkes's black mamod.

Thanks for the good advice. I would go to the ironmongers after school-if my school day didn't end at 6pm! I'll have to wait untill the weekend.

Make sure you get a "Viton" "O" ring, they can take the heat better. Alan Whittaker of PPS Models also recommends silicon "O" rings for use on steam loco's ( I don't know if they come in differing types with different temperature ranges.

A cautionary tale.......(for what it's worth)
I read an article or letter in a garden railway magazine some years ago, by Mike Chaney, who warned people to use the proper type of "O" rings and to be careful with "O" rings if they melt, as someone he knew had an "O" ring melt, and got some of the substance on his finger. It ate its way into his flesh and if I remember rightly he ended up having to have his finger amputated. I cannot remember exactly what the "O" ring was made of, but I think it was Neoprene.

You could try and get a box of assorted rubber o rings from B&Q. Chances are one will fit. Works on my engines.

I've found that some of the Pound Stores do a small box of 'O' rings for £1. Although metric size I have found these OK for the Mamod steam chest 'O' ring over the steam pipe, same size for the regulator/reverser steam and exhaust pipes, and I've used one on the regulator of a Mamod SP6 as the fitted one had been pinched.
