Projects for father in law
Projects for father in law
Hi all,
I am now on Furlough for at least the next 3 weeks. I was planning on completing the valve gear for my Corris no 3 but the FIL has a few little projects he wants done.
I tried to convert him to narrow gauge, but he wanted something to remind him of the LMS around Liverpool when he was a lad.
I will post things as they are finished.
First up a RH165 diesel shunter, just converted to Chuffed to bits Rc.
Regards,
Richard Cooke

Re: Projects for father in law
Hi Richard
The way you've painted those figures is superb. What's your approach? Is it dark primer and dry brushing or base colours and a dark wash? Or have you a tightly guarded family secret method?
Rik
Re: Projects for father in law
Hi Rik,
I've painted a lot of warhammer figures so it comes from that, I have a 40 odd acrylic citadel paints and washes, but you can just mix colours up.
These aren't as natural as I normally do, they have a bit more contrast as they will be viewed from a distance.
Wash in soap (removes release agents)
Clean up flash, mould lines and irregularities
Spray prime (normally grey)
Paint all base colours
Apply wash (darker colour into crevices)
Go over with base colour, leaving wash at edges
Apply lighter shade of base colours to higher points
(imagine where the sun would hit)
Lighter shade again to pick out edges and detail
Buttons, eyes etc
Gloss varnish on anything shiny, normally shoes
I use a mix of brush painting and dry brushing (this works better if the model has texture) for the highlights.
You will go over the edges sometimes, I just go round after each stage and touch anything up

Richard Cooke

Re: Projects for father in law
It's the father in the laws. He's got plenty of room, just needs to work on his tracklaying!
Im currently on a narrowboat, contemplating if mamod curves will fit on the roof.

Re: Projects for father in law
I've seen it done - there was a picture in SMT of someone with an oval on the roof of their boat, with packing under the track on each side to compensate for the curve of the roof. You'd want to be sure you got it right though - the canal would provide a soft landing for derailments, but doesn't have a lot else going for it!
You've made a lovely job of the figures and loco - reminds me of the boxy industrials I used to glimpse on the Silvertown Tramway as a child...

Re: Projects for father in law
Those are lovely, and beautifully painted too!
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?
Re: Projects for father in law
Thanks Richard. Very helpful. I suspected you were using wargaming techniques. My wargaming mate uses a similar approach except he starts with black primer and then dry brushes using progressively lighter shades of each base colour. I've been wondering whether a dark wash would give more pronounced emphasis to the shadows. I do like the effect on your figures.Cookie wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 2:10 pm Hi Rik,

Hi all,
Thank you for all the nice comments.
Next I have been building a Brunel Models waiting shelter. It's been painted into LMS colours even though it's a GWR design. It will be varnished.
Apparently I have two more of the single sided version on the way.
Regards

Re: Projects for father in law
That looks good, wouldn't want to be cutting the fascia out by hand!!
Grant.

Re: Projects for father in law
Hi Grant,
It came precut in plastic, but did need a bit of sandpaper to all of the grooves.
I reckon you could sell metres of the fascia on its own!

Richard Cooke

Hi all,
Last for a while (until I get some more things to build).
Tenmille signal kit, with a distant knocked up from spares.
Hopefully I can get a bit done on my Corris No. 3 now.

Richard Cooke
