(WH)WHR Rolling Stock
Re: (WH)WHR Rolling Stock
Hello!
I know what you mean about the sheen Philip, although I'm not entirely sure what the cause (or cure!) is... They have been tricky to photograph, particularly when the light's in the wrong place, which account for part of it, and the cheap Poundland primer might be partly responsible? I think it's possible that the vinegar residue might also be acting as a kind of strange edible varnish! I might try to rinse them to remove some of the vinegar - I'm a little concerned about what impact that might have on the finish, but I plan to paint them and don't know how well paint takes to vinegar! Another cure might be a spray of matt varnish - but ditto re the vinegar!
More trial and error is called for, I think...
Thanks,
Andrew.

They really look good. Up to you, but I think they look great as they are. Old rust tends to go quite dark in time - these look well past their sell by date.

Good afternoon!
I've made a small step forwards with the tippers by adding running numbers. I used the stencil given away by the 16mm Association some years ago and took very little trouble over making sure it was neat because I was going for a rough and ready look - applied by the apprentice rather than a sign-writer. I'm quite how pleased with they turned out OK:
Just a weathering wash or two to go now, mostly to blend in some of the areas that weren't rusted and still look a little too clean.
Hope you're all having a good weekend,
Andrew.

Re: (WH)WHR Rolling Stock
Afternoon all,
After a hectic few weeks, a lovely relaxing Sunday morning seemed the perfect time to finish off the tippers with a little paint here and there where required.
This afternoon they had a very brief run up the garden, starting in the headshunt at Trefechan, the closest thing the (WH)WHR has to a quarry environment:
A trundle up the line followed, reaching about halfway up Penlan bank, where the track is too overgrown to continue...
I've got another three that will get the same treatment at some point, then perhaps I'll purchase another two so I can either run two rakes of 5 or a long rake of 10. For now, this little rake are just the thing to help out with the Spring repair programme...
Cheers all,
Andrew.

Looks like you are back in the garden in force now Andrew, nice photos.
When are you going to get brave on the paintwork on that diesel?

Re: (WH)WHR Rolling Stock
That's a tricky one... It's named after my late mother-in-law, and was purchased with a bequest from her, so I feel a bit funny about attacking it with a palette of grot-coloured paint. I did choose the colour scheme thinking it would look like the diesels owned by the MOD which are/were kept pretty clean - I may tone it down a little at some point though. Alternatively, I've got an Andel Moelwyn which I'll weather at some point - I need to sort the batteries out first though, they gave up the ghost after a long period out of use when I was between railways...tom_tom_go wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 2:57 pm

Hi Andrew,
They look really great. I love the loco too, it looks like a well cared for work horse, I like it just the way it is. The whole train together in the lovely setting of your line is a real inspiration.

Re: (WH)WHR Rolling Stock
They do look the part, nice and used. I'm sure some locos were looked after better than others even though they worked equally hard. No reason why this one has to be dirty.

Re: (WH)WHR Rolling Stock
That is one great looking train. The only thing that would improve it, in my eyes, is somebody in the cab to twiddle the knobs!
It makes me remember that I ought to do the same thing to my rake of skips, but tbh I've been to chicken to 'ruin' a perfectly good set of wagons, up till now.

Re: (WH)WHR Rolling Stock
Glad you like the wagons, thank you!
Margaret does have a driver, somewhere, I'll have to try to dig him out from wherever he's hiding, and then perhaps attach him more permanently to the footplate!
Cheers,
Andrew.

They look spot-on trundling along behind Margaret. Hadn't noticed she was driverless - need to go to SpecSavers.....

Superb looking train - and thanks for describing your rust making process, I must have a go at the filings and vinegar technique, the results you've achieved are brilliant.
