Post box

Post by Robert Hammond » Sat Dec 08, 2018 9:03 am

I have just completed a post box. The main body is a piece of wooden dowel, which was probably once a broken broom handle. I have a policy, never throw anything away which may be of some use one day. The top is an oversize circular disc of lead sheet which was left over from repairs to the church roof and is also used for weighting rolling stock. I cut a narrow sector out of the disc, bent it to the shape of a chinaman's hat, soldered the joint, and fixed it to the top with epoxy. A short piece of copper wire, a strand of electrical cable, was bent and soldered to form the letter slot, and fixed with liquid superglue. A piece of thin plasticard wrapped and superglued around the base completed the structure. It took far longer to paint than to construct, to be honest, the longest job was watching the paint dry.

Hi Bob
Sounds clever. My sort of modelling. Have you managed to figure out how to upload a picture? Would love to see it.

I'm afraid I'm still struggling with compressing photos. One tool I tried (not one of the suggestions) gave me a virus which has been quarantined. I need help with this.

Irfanview is excellent and free. It has preset or customizable resizing ability. Simply open the picture, click image, resize, and select what you want and save. I pretty much always use the 640 x480 preset, for posting here.

I,ll second Philip's suggestion re Irfanview, it can be simple to use, or as complex as you want. Also totally agree about the 640 x 480 picture size. Personally I find little joy in gigantic pics. that you have to scroll to see the whole pic. (and I have a large monitor) and consequently don't bother opening the posts.
Grant.

Post box finally managed to get posted :thumbright: Awaiting re-siting, homebuilt swing unintentionally in background, made from single strand of copper electrical
wire bent and soft soldered. Very crude but animal-proof, may redesign.
