Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Hi Andrew,
back in my thread is a full description of how I made the crossing keeper's cottage but, briefly, it is made from left-overs from a Pendle Valley station building kit which I chopped into a low relief, track-side, warehouse..... The rear gable end wall sections and a pair of side walls, along with part of the resin roof, became the cottage..... Dogs are not included in the kt!

Hi Rob,RobRossington wrote: ↑Mon Sep 10, 2018 1:38 pm That breakdown crane looks incredible! Can I ask what the loco that’s pulling it is please?
the loco is 'George', my very first scratch-build in 16mm scale when we used to exhibit an exhibition layout some 40 years ago. The body is all Plastikard and the four wheel motor bogie is by Lima. At that time we were operating 12v track power but now I have removed the wheel pick-ups and use a RC operated battery truck connected to the loco by plug-in system......

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Although it has been overcast but dry today I got on with more slab laying around the Manor House and the shops on the High Street. The cement I'm using is waterproof and fast drying so I thought I'd risk it. As it turned out it has only just begun to drizzle so I think they should be OK......
The next area to tackle is probably the trickiest as I have two rows of shops facing each other in a pedestrianised roadway. I have begun by positioning one row and laying out a dry line of slate slabs to get the feel of it.......
Tomorrows forecast is poor so I might have to wait a while before I can continue. The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?

Love that strangely roofed side shed, it looks so real. Something you see in real life but rarely modelled. Genius!
Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
The loco and village are fantastic examples of your modelling skills Peter. I am full of admiration and envious of the time you have to devote to your railway.

Onwards and upwards... as they say. Lots of slate cutting, lots of mess and lots of tile cement, but the slabs are now all laid, set and grouted....
Still some detailing to do but nearly there. The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?
Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Incredible how the paving brings it all together, especially evident in the first picture showing both sides ift he street with the paving right across. Presumably the 'holes' are for flower beds or something?

Luverly paving, with the added bonus of embedding the buildings.

Peter, your attention to detail is amazing. I can only speak for myself, but I find your work inspiring. I look forward to your progress reports with keen anticipation.

Ian,
I'm happy for you to speak for me too in this Ian! Your post sums it up perfectly for me.
Peter,
Thanks for the continued provision of something for us to strive to emulate.
All the best,
Andrew

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
After a terrible storm throughout yesterday at last the sun is shining, so I decided to remove the tarpaulin which has been protecting my SBR coated, crushed oyster shell to see whether it has set.... it has! This is the area where the rectangular gaps were left between the slabs in what will be the pedestrian zone.....

I don't know about the town planners visions ( too much of the hard stuff perhaps?) but I can visualise it and it looks very nice to me.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Thanks for the comments, at this stage it does look a little firm underfoot! There are planting areas surrounding the site which have not yet been filled and will soften the overall appearance when they are. That is something I have to wait for nature to take care of and this is not the best time of year to expect quick results.

Peter, Just curious, is your drainage system working as you had hoped? I believe you've had a fair bit of rain to test it recently.
It did occur to me when you first showed them that the drain grid slots might be too fine for surface tension to allow easyflow through. I hope I'm wrong and I'd love to see them in action with a nice swirl of water going down the plughole!

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Hi Philip, I'm afraid I can't show a 'swirl of water', firstly because I have no intention of standing out in rain sufficient to see it happen! However, I can say it definitely works, and very well too, as the areas where the drains are show no surface water at all, whereas, in a couple of dips elsewhere in the road surface, water pools form as I have not been clever enough to manage a fall across the entire space. As long as there is an escape route for the majority of the wet stuff I am quite content with the remainder as it recreates 12"/ft. scale where surface water does occasionally gather in puddles.

Thanks Peter, glad it does work. I do over think/over complicate things sometimes

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
It's all looking great to me - I love how the various elements - buildings, walls, roads , pavements - combine together so realistically and it will look even better when the planting softens it all...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
As mentioned elsewhere (Help and advice) I have now received some kit parts from The Lineside Hut and they look to be very well produced. My original intention was to order just the CRV kit but as I have no experience in wooden kit construction I also ordered some home builder parts to practise on. They make a range of coach sides and ends and I purchased the four compartment option with the intention of cutting the sides in half thus making two, two compartment coaches. In the event I have decided to stick with plan 'A' and build one bogie coach.
The parts as supplied..... After some surgery..... Resulting in..... I have spray painted in primer and three top coats of gloss to hide the wood-grain effect and will post the results of that next time.
