Glendale Rocket Project.
Hi,
We spent Christmas as we often do in West Wales while visiting a charity shop in Haverfordwest my wife bought me a belated Christmas present spending a whole pound!. It came with a carriage which had two of its doors missing. I have previously fitted an electric chassis to a larger version of the Glendale Rocket as the locomotive is known. This version is considerably smaller so I thought it would be fun to see if it was possible to do the same to this model; to this end earlier this week I made a start. The first bit was a bit brutal removing the cab roof which was glued on. Then the rear axle was removed by pulling off one of it wheels. The five screws that hold the two halves of the body together were removed. The rivets that held the wheels in place were punched out. And the body assembled again to see how it looked. The body was taken apart again and the cutting began. All of the interior structure was removed including some of screw securing points, the body will eventually be glued back together. At the end of play yesterday the body looked thus. I will post further photographs as the project progresses.
Regards Tony.

Good to see you working on another project Tony, shame you didn't drop in as you were so near.
Difficult to judge the size of your loco from the pictures.... if smaller than the previous one will it still run on 32mm?

Re: Glendale Rocket Project.
I will watch this project with interest. I have just acquired one of these locos and just found out the secrets of dismantling it.
My next task was to work out how to motorize it.

Another good project Tony - I love these - I keep scouring the charity shops for suitable candidates

For a few years we have stayed at St Brides Castle for a week over Christmas; I have never thought of contacting anyone in the area maybe if we do the same this year?
The model is 110 mm long over smoke box door/bunker and 50 mm wide, though 45 mm of its length is taken up with the cab; not a lot to play with, it will be 32 mm.
Hope to see you later in the year.
Regards Tony.

I hope you find my thread useful but no guarantees that it will turn out OK.

Re: Glendale Rocket Project.
Hi,
The Glendale Rocket is an interesting design locomotive there cannot be many if any inside cylinder Atlantic that have well tanks? Yesterday a lot of time was used up deciding what to do regarding the wheel arrangement to be used it didn't seem practical as with the larger model to retain the 4-4-2 configuration an 0-6-0 seemed the way to go. Also it didn't seem practical to fit side rods as they would be very small but most of the time was trying to figure out how to fit these bits and pieces to the model. Some of B&Q's 20 mm aluminium channel, a on/off and reverse switch, can motor with worm and wheel, six of Mr Binnie's skip wheels, a AAA battery holder and three pulleys and spring wire for six wheel drive.
As with the larger model the battery box could be fitted under the now partly open or door less carriage, doing this would allow further cells to be fitted so allow R/C to be fitted. While cogitating which doesn't hurt much if done slowly the original wheel centres were fitted to the Binnie wheels. Eventually an idea where all the components could be fitted to the locomotive came up, it required further surgery which will be tried out today.

Re: Glendale Rocket Project.
Hi,
The surgery required was the removal of some plastic from inside the bunker this left only the two screws one on each buffer beam holding the model together. Doing this created a space for fitting the battery. The chassis now looked like this. And with most of the components fitted like this. Bearings have been fitted to the chassis and it has been stripped for painting. With luck I might get it wired tomorrow.

Brilliant work Tony, I reckon you could motorize an egg cup given time.
Grant.
PS I hope Rik is reading about this battery powered steam outline.

Re: Glendale Rocket Project.
Following it with interest, Grant. As one who uses proprietary motor blocks, I'm really interested in the chassis. That looks quite simple to construct and very robust. Just wondering where the bushes are sourced or are they just pieces of brass tube?

A double one with eggs in? I will start looking in charity shops.

Brandbright for 1/8" axles. I bought a lot a few years ago I don't know if the new company still do them.

Nifty adaptation! Am I correct that's 4WD?
I know better than to assume this is a joke It'd be very appropriate for the Easter Open Day!

Re: Glendale Rocket Project.
Hi,
The paint dried over night so the wiring was done this morning. With big brother. The carriage was finished. Finished! I am quite pleased with the results, though the six wheel drive was a little optimistic and I didn't allow for the pulley on the back of a wheel so had to move the axle and now only one securing screw can be used; this isn't a problem as the unused thread will still locate the chassis.

Re: Glendale Rocket Project.
Great work again Tony, just went back to check the dimensions of the loco. No worries about traction either it would appear.

Great outcome. Will you be fitting r/c?
