That looks good. The wall will make a great backscene too.

I hardly noticed the track base because I was drawn to that wonderful wall..... lovely piece of architecture.
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?
Re: Building the Compton Valence Light Railway gets underway
Ooooo flint walls.........
Growing up in a flint area this reminds me of home. I love this type of construction.
Have fun with the railway and please post lots of pictures.

If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer!
Re: Building the Compton Valence Light Railway gets underway
It's a very old converted dairy. If you look closely you can see the blocked in doorway at the far end where they used to take the cows in for milking. And yes, it will make a great backdrop especially as tnere's a profusion of Mind Your Own Business growing up the wall ready to creep over the track and ballast when it's laid.

Re: Building the Compton Valence Light Railway gets underway
Is that a wood or concrete base?
Re: Building the Compton Valence Light Railway gets underway
It's a tanilised timber frame 'L' bracketed to an existing concrete path, topped with felt covered exterior ply. I wanted ventilation underneath as it's so close to the house wall. The cottage is so old there's no dampcourse, just 2' thick walls! It will be ballasted, and have rocks and a gravel path fronting it but with gaps for air circulation and water run off to escape, so should all blend together nicely.

As others have said, the exterior wall will be a nice looking backdrop to that part of the railway.
Re: Building the Compton Valence Light Railway gets underway
Thank you. Hopefully the rest won't look too shabby either.

Re: Building the Compton Valence Light Railway gets underway
Just wondering if this should be moved to the Railways and Layouts section so I can make it ongoing? Sorry for the inconvenience.

No inconvinience at all, your wish is a mods command! There are a number of railway construction projects on this part of the forum so moving it here does make a fair bit of sense.
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."

Re: Compton Valence Light Railway
Looking good and a new railway to follow in 2018, keep us posted.
Re: Compton Valence Light Railway
Good idea re ventilation - I have similar considerations with my 1850 walls!
Where did I put that uncoupler?
Re: Compton Valence Light Railway
I'm very jealous of your wall backdrop, as opposed to my paling fence. Looking forward to progress.

Great looking start! Nothing like a piece of newly laid trackbed to get the creative urges flowing!

Many thanks for all the positive comments folks they're much appreciated.
Your YouTube videos have been quite an inspiration for me Rik so if I end up with a layout half as good I will be well chuffed.

Re: Compton Valence Light Railway
Is this under the same management as the Chycknell Valley Light Railway? If so, can't wait to see what you have in store...
Re: Compton Valence Light Railway
I certainly enjoy making them. Good to hear that my dabblings have helped to entice others into this fascinating hobby. Be interested to see your trains in action sometime soon?
