My main project

Post by dizzysteamer » Mon Jan 02, 2017 11:52 am

My late Dad owned a land rover from as far back as my memories go consequently we have three in the family .
My own a 1958 series 2 swb had to come off the road 15 years back because of really bad rust worm. I detest the amount of electronics in modern cars I think vehicle tech as gone money mad home maintenance is going to be a thing of the past but with my old girl I can anything to her myself.

I started to rebuild her last year this is Sandy back then

And this is as far as I got today the bulkhead needs to go on next but its far to cold for me to work outside :D

Once she is up and running I can devote all my attention on our garden railway.

Great project, I agree that modern cars are far too complex which is why I drive a couple of these.

Wonderful, a fellow L/R nut.
I have pair of SII's, one just out of MOT (needs a little patch on the chassis) and the other is stored halfway through a full rebuild. As an ex mechanic I agree with your comments about electrics.

I used to work at the Derby Land Rover dealership. Myself and a couple of apprentices went to an Induction Day at Gaydon, and we looked at their early Series I. They were astonished at how little there was under the bonnet, compared with the modern ones they workd on.

Anything with more than two fuses is too much like hard work.

If you want to confuse a newly "qualified" "mechanic" show them anything build before 1990.

I ran one of the few garages in the area that was happy to work on classic cars. It meant that we saw everything from real Minis to Rolls Royces and all things in between. Great fun and the boys had much more fun playing with real cars than modern euroboxes.

Now that's a blast-from-the-past and something I had forgotten about until you mentioned it, but it's true! I remember my 1955 Morris Minor ROH 503 (horrible thing) and my first, 1963, Mini, 123 JOV had only two fuses...... but they did the job. True to say there was a lot less to put through them, but who needs all that gubbins anyway? just more to go wrong!
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?
