Would You Buy Back?

Post by dougrail » Wed Dec 21, 2016 3:13 am

Let's say you sold a steam loco that you had rebuilt and restored, and you had sold it four years ago to make some money. It was very successful and the sale completed.

Move forward four years. Your pride and joy of your collections has gone - insert whatever reason here. Fire, theft, disaster. You are looking for a new engine to fulfil the roles that the now-gone pride and joy did.

You recall the one you sold four years ago. It ticks all the boxes - you can rebuild it to pride and joy's spec, mechanically. It has character. It has unique aspects of it. It is lined out. The buyer would resell to you at the price you sold it him for, so fair and square.

Would you?

Yes sounds good. Prices have shot up so far cheaper than a new one.

It is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If you consider it is worth the asking price and you have the dosh then you only have to consider what else you could spend the money on. Either way, good luck. :D

It was always agreed that if I bought back, it would be at the cost that I sold it and no more. So its either the cash as originally sold or the engine itself. So no gain or loss on the point it was sold. Think of it like a pawn shop deal

If it is available for sale on the open market, would you expect it to be offered, and achieve, a higher price? If so you can't loose whether you decide to keep it yourself or sell on again.

Yes I would buy one of my past engines back. I would love the chance to have my green Pearse Countess with RC and Whistle back I sold around 2002. I nolonger remember who bought her. Mike

With a name like that? There's too many coincidences to pass it up.

This buyback would be to make it a keeper loco, a new 'small loco' in my permanent shed alongside my Caradoc and my RH Beyer Peacock.

The name "Second Chance" was given to it by me four years ago as it had had indeed a second chance on two scores: after 10-15years in store in an attic I had brought it to light and also, within its time with me it had killed its first paint job (bright red with white lines) and somwas repainted black with Penrhyn lining.

This time would be a second chance on a new level - to become a regular permanent runner. Its in the frame as it ticks all the boxes in thenwake of last summers theft.

A lot of input here. Thank you gents, it has been most helpful. Keep an eye out, I intend to record a diary in the Loco section. If you chaps look back to 2012 and early 2013 threads for "Second Chance", that is the loco I am seriously thinking about bringing back.

I sold it to a keen collector who is also a good friend of mine; however he has never steamed it and has also built a little IPE coach for it.
