Best radio system
Hi , I've just begun converting my roundhouse Bertie to radio control . Online there is a lot of information about the conversion however most of the electronics either are no longer supplied or out of date . Could anyone suggest a good 2.4ghz RC transmitter and receiver set (I have the servo as supplied by roundhouse) that is at a reasonable price (around the 40-60 pound mark).
Cheers

Absolutely RC-Trains by Ge-Rik on here. Great experience with Rik and Deltang stuff, couldn't ask for more on either count

If its joystick stuff your looking for (like model aeroplane controllers) then I use Planet equipment, its not the cheapest 2.4ghz gear you can buy but its not the most expensive - its also good quality.

Look at jperkindistribution for cheap planet transmitters, as mentioned, quality equipment

The problem with plane radio gear is it is just that, designed for a plane.s Rik's gear, and Deltang gear is designed for RC trains.
The downside to using a stick is the following:
1) There is much more chance of the stick getting knocked and causing it to go to fast and derail
2) A stick does not have the precise control of a knob as there is less movement in a stick compared to a fully rotational knob, therefore its more dificult to set the precise speed you need, let alone hold it there as a stick is so delicate on movement.
Each to their own of course and we can all make our own preferences and choices, but I can assure anyone that factually as far as trains go, plane RC gear is no where near as good as true RC train gear, it really is that simple.
If someone wants a load of RC plane gear to use on a train I will be able to let them have some at a good price over the coming months as I am ripping all my plane gear out of my trains and converting it to train RC gear. No good for my planes as I use a 14 channel TX for those.

Thanks for the accolades folks. I've only just picked up on this thread.
By coincidence (yes really - before I saw this thread), I've just released the RCT-Tx24 which is designed for controlling up to twelve live steamers (or a mix of live steam and battery). I've had a couple of enquiries about a Tx for live steamers and so made one for -steves- of this parish and recently one for another customer and so thought it was about time I made it official. http://rctrains.co.uk/Transmitters.htm#Tx24
It has a knob for speed, a knob for reverser and the inertia control knob can be reset (by holding the bind button down for 20s) to control a third servo (eg for gas?). The bind button can be used to control a servo for the whistle.
I'm in the process of developing a handheld Tx for controlling a single live steam loco. It would have a speed knob and a reverser knob and the bind button can be used for the whistle. Just trying to decide whether it needs a third knob (eg for gas). I'm thinking it would sell for somewhere around £40.
Any thoughts?
Rik

Could the Tx24 be bound to a spektrum receiver, or would I have to purchase another Rx?

Yes it can be bound to a Spektrum RX, but its has to be the DSM ones not the DSMX. I know this as I have bound to aAR6100e and an AR7000.
For those interested, you can add extra channels to the RX if need be on Rik's TX's, ask him for details as I have an extra one on mine for sound on /off as well as one for whistle / horn.

Need to check which Spektrum I have.

If it binds to a DX4, DX5, DX6 then you should be okBaBBLR:118550 wrote:Thanks Steves,-steves-:118549 wrote:Yes it can be bound to a Spektrum RX, but its has to be the DSM ones not the DSMX. I know this as I have bound to aAR6100e and an AR7000.

In the meantime - there's this video showing a battery and a live steam loco being controlled by a Deltang Tx22.

Very interesting, thank you.ge_rik:118555 wrote:In the meantime - there's this video showing a battery and a live steam loco being controlled by a Deltang Tx22.
Can I ask a question please? On the steam loco, am I correct in thinking that the central dot at the 12 o'clock position does not indicate/set "regulator shut"? From what I could see "regulator shut" is at 5 o'clock position, and fully open is at 7 o'clock. Is that correct?
