Cleaning valve gear

Post by godsteam » Thu May 12, 2016 9:13 pm

Hi

I've just bought a second-hand RH Billy and the valve gear has got very stained with oil etc over the years. Do I have to dismantle the valve gear and clean abrasively or is there something I can brush on which will bring back the shine.

Paraffin will work as well.
What ever you use, don't forget to re-lube afterwards.
If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer!

Big Jim is right. On the big railway we use a paraffin and oil mix, but it is important to re-lube afterwards.

If you do need to use an abrasive, the rubberised grit blocks are excellent.
