May 2016 - from Butterley to Port Erin

Post by dougrail » Wed May 11, 2016 12:18 am

Sunday was a lovely warm early summer day - it certainly couldn't be wasted. And it turns out that as of last November, TrentBarton had introduced a new regular bus that goes rapidly from Derby city centre to Butterley [stopping right outside Midland Rail Centre] in 25mins flat - "The Comet". So, I decided to try this and get a good day's running in...

The Isle of Man Steam Railway stock being prepared as now finally complete for service after trials.
Image

Transfers applied and lower footboards removed to make transporting them easier, as well as to reduce chances of being obstructed by foilage or gravel. All four coaches similarly treated, but the new brake coach cameas sold without the lower footwell.

Both trains now out...contrasting indeed.

From Douglas to Port Erin, calling at Port Soderick, Ballasalla, Castletown and St. Marys - also showing the customised Brake vehicle as bought at Peterborough with its black ends, pipes, lamp hangar and lamp as well as roof decoration.

In full steam, showing off the now complete "Isle of Man Trainset" of rebuilt loco and matching carriages, all ready for continuous service. The other two 'sets' are a brake bogie and three wheelsets from completion, respectively.

Great Photos. I like Butterly too. It is even better once the vegetation gets into full bloom.

Like most gardens, it looks at its best in the spring.

Doug - I've nicked a couple of shots of Victory for the Butterley web site - hope you don't mind!

Where on earth did those dual scale points come from? I have been after some of those since deciding to build a railway some 5 years ago and never found any :(

I was thinking they had to be hand built. I don't suppose there are any plans for them kicking around?

Thanks Gralyn. It is a nice running line, decent length and a number of photographic opportunities. The vegetation adds an extra dimension to the background and is lovingly cared for by members of the Assocation.

Will you be in Wales for this year's Talyllyn Gala?

Re Talyllyn Gala 2016. Quite probably, it is such a great event though if you want the whole experience ( a good lunch and a trip up the line and back all in one day) it means only one half hour steaming session. Or is there something I am missing.
Regards Graham.

Well, there is the fact that it is running from Friday to Sunday, so, three days to squeeze everything and a good run on Llechfan in? :o
