I've not seen inside the cab of one of these before, so thank you for posting this picture.

The model is based on David Lloyd George and it is interesting to see that they have even incorporated the fireman's atomisation steam manifold (the box to the left of the handbrake with two pipes running in to it) for the oil-firing system, complete with blower control levers, atomisation control valves and main shut-off valve.

The gauges are (left to right) bottom-end steam chest pressure, top-end steam chest pressure, boiler pressure, top-end fuel oil atomisation pressure, bottom-end atomisation pressure.

Thank you for that information Tony.... I just thought they gave the time in 5 different time-zones!!!!!
I freely admit knowing nothing about the way these things work, I just appreciate them for their design, the way they were made to look beautiful in appearance as well as being functional, and their position in social and industrial history.

Whilst waiting for Rik to receive stocks of Rx65 units I thought about making more stock, (as if I needed more?) and found a photograph of an unusual flat wagon which I think I took about twenty years ago in Armley Mills, Leeds. If I am wrong no doubt someone will let me know. If you do know anything about this wagon, please tell me why it is painted white?

Image

I made a pair from plasticard with whitemetal axleboxes and steel wheels, underneath the floor I also added lead sheet as there is little weight in this wagon.

A coat of grey primer means they are now ready for paint and weathering.

Well Rik didn't keep me waiting for long and today I received another two Rx's in the post. By this evening I had it installed in another diesel outline loco, having fitted a new Como motor and bevel gears too.
Just like the other four locos already fitted, this is a superb runner with excellent control from the RCTrains transmitter.

Image

The second unit delivered today will be installed in my Fairlie when it is painted (a big job I think). Because the loco is brass, an extended aerial is fitted which will be inside the cab to receive the signal.

Until then a further two Rx units are on order for more locos to be modified.

Those wagons really look the part, Peter. Cracking job (as always). Glad the rxs are being put to good use.

A paint finish to the wagons today and now they look like this...

I have decided to paint them brown (wood) colour with weathering as I still have no idea why the original, (as in the photograph above) was painted white. I couldn't visualise them standing out amongst my other subdued stock so brown it is!
Another two of Rik's Rx65 units arrived in the post this morning so now is the time to fit out another loco.
Pictures to follow.

Thanks Annie, but more work on fitting Rx to another loco today.  This time it was the turn of a loco I built about 25 years ago.  I have never seen another one modelled anywhere and I made it for a particular use... to pull my Rail-gun and armoured train.

This is based on a Czech armoured trolley which was built prior to WW2.  It shows German markings and camouflage colours.

Fascinating prototype! Looks like it might owe its origins to Leonardo da Vinci

If that is the title in German, or Faroese!, what might that mean in English?

Zinn Schildkröte is German for Tin Turtle. I don't speak Faroese (which is one of the reasons why I work in Germany).

Brilliant!!! too obvious really, I should have guessed.
There are many 'Tin Turtles' about so I wanted something completely different. I found this illustrated in a book of WW2 transport but only as a sketch with no dimensions. It has worked out well and looks the part with my military train.
There was also a WW1 version which was less well designed and protected.

I've seen the rail gun!

Peter should charge 50p a look, it is very impressive.

Wow! thanks for the compliment Jim, that's another beer I owe you!
I did manage to get some pictures today as the weather is so much improved on yesterday. The loco first to show more detail...

Image

The Rail-gun itself was another item built more than 25 years ago when we used to tour the exhibition layout. I was interested in making stock items which no-one else had and the layout, which represented a preservation line, allowed for such things to be used.
This is all plasticard with punched rivets individually placed, the barrel is perspex, lathe turned. It has 16 steel wheels all running in whitemetal axleboxes and the bogies are separated into two four wheel units attached to a pivoted carrier so that curves can be taken without causing derailments.
I studied many, many photographs of prototypical rail-guns before making this model and it is a mix of several types from different countries. I even bought a rare, and quite expensive, book on the subject to make sure I captured the look.
It measures 30 inches (762mm) in length.

That looks amazing, Peter. is it a Howitzer, or is that something different? I think the RHDR version would be slightly outgunned.

The RHDR rail-gun did bring down an enemy 'plane, much to the pilot's embarrassment! Mine will never see action unless the population of Umbridge and Brockhamton Villages have a serious falling out!
