Aerocar

Post by Alan P » Sun Aug 30, 2015 5:09 pm

If anyone was wondering what the cheap radio contol gear, motor & ESC were for see below!
Always wanted to have a go at building something like this after seeing a video of Gordon Diplock's Aero-Railcar.

Need to mess about a bit with different propellers but the basics are there. The very short video below is clips from the first test run of the chassis.
It's a bit difficult filming and operating the R/C but you can get it to run round at something a little less than Mach 1 :)

Very nice, a suitable dose of lunacy in a far too serious world.
There is a prototype of this idea. There was a German aerocar built in the 1930's (I think). I have seen a rear view of it and a dirty great prop spinning inches away from passengers on a station platform looks like an interesting way of relieving the housing shortage![/i]

That's the bunny!
I think First group should introduce them on the line to Pembroke and run them backwards. That would sort out the problems with vegetation overhanging the line.
Any stray sheep would end up as instant mince!

Well it's more or less finished, still playing around with propellers and i need an nice chrome headlight for the roof. I might add some side rails to hide the bogies too.

Oh, here is a picture of the original Gordon Diplock Aero-Railcar. I didn't set out to make an exact duplicate just to make something similar.

Very good. I was the former owner of the railcar but sold it to a friend.

Do you have any photos of the original? I've searched on the internet but with little success.

I have made a few cosmetic tweaks since that last picture was taken. This is how it is now.

That looks fantastic - congratulations! I saw the original at work once or twice - you've really captured the feel of it. Alas, I have no photos...

I'm sure you'll film it in action in due course - I look forward to watching!

Thanks for the comments Andrew. I'm not too unhappy with it myself.

Looking good! And very at home on you lovely line...

Thanks for the video,

Andrew.

PS We've just been down to Devon (lovely Teignmouth) for a couple of days and the phrase "blowing a hooley" has been much used...

Well my little back yard is very sheltered but as you can see from the video it was windy enough to actually move the tripod that the camera was on.
The Aerocar didn't seem to be bothered at all, obviously in it's element :)

Hi Tony,

Thanks. I sent you a couple of emails recently but didn't get a reply so i thought you might have been on holiday.

Cheers,
Alan.

Alan P, I write in your topic. I did the same air car. I was inspired by a strange car with a propeller "Helica" Marcel Leyat .

I like that Ruby. Looks like a 1920's design maybe? I can imagine the driver wearing 'plus fours' and smoking a pipe. :D

Ruby, looks fantastic and original, never seen anything like that before. Sounds like it's just as loud as mine too!
