Archangel Vale of Rheidol 2-6-2 on ebay
Hi all there is an Archangel Vale of Rheidol 2-6-2 on ebay at the moment, I'm letting everyone know because I'm fed up with people bidding ridiculously high when there is nearly a week to go so hopefully this will encourage more people to bid so they don't stand a chance.

I guess if you wish to feel a false sense of hope for the next week that it won't eventually sell for over £800, it sort of makes sense. Otherwise if there is an individual who is willing to pay more than you are for the engine, I fail to see how the timing of the highest bid is going to increase anyone else's chances of winning. It's still going to sell for the high bid. Seems to me like ridiculously high bid at first saves everybody who wasn't prepared to pay that much in the first place from wasting their time making futile bids.cncmodeller:114443 wrote:Let me explain, there are 4 days to run, by bidding high now you're not going to have nobody bidding after you, by raising the price by a big jump now is that all you're doing is making yourself bid higher later. Does that not make sense?

Like me, for instance. I see it's up to £700 already. I would not pay that much for that engine. I'm glad I didn't waste my time bidding against someone who would!

I don't really get the logic as a rare item will sell for a high price no matter when bids are placed if people know about it. Early high bids may deter others from bidding later. In any case many of these locos seem to be bought by a few dealers as you see them on their websites or stalls at shows a few weeks later and they will have their max bid price anyway.

I would because as a result of greenhorn ebayers who ramped up the cost by showing all their cards at the beginning of the auction.Great for the seller of course. Its a lot for what actually is a bit of a basic model it would have been better to get Stuart to build a new one in about 6 weeks it would have been nicer, if you google Archangel there is an image of Stuart with a more recent Vale of Rheidol 2-6-2 and its got an accurate smokebox door etc and looks a treat.

I think it is total rubbish about early bids ramping up the price as over £2200 of the sale amount was added in the last few minutes or seconds.
You just have to face facts that there are some very wealthy 16mm collectors who will pay any amount for a loco they want.
From what I've seen recenlty it is better to up the bid price to an ok amount at the start or the seller accepts an offer off ebay and removes it from auction. The other option is to go direct yourself and offer a fair price which may or may not be more than the auction end price.
The daft thing is Stuart would probably make a new one for under £3000.

You might also want to consider if you are hoping to get a loco at a good price in auction the last thing you should do is post it on a forum that can be read by anyone in the world!
If I had done that a few months ago I wouldn't of got my Merlin Yungfrau for £260 which considering that it is just about the rarest loco they made it could of gone for well over £1000 if any serius collectors had seen it.

I spelt it wrong in should be Jungfrau which is a double pun as it is an 0-6-2 based on a Jung loco and developed from the 0-6-0 Merlin Matterhorn, Jungfrau I believe is another mountain int he alps. I always struggle to get my own photos to work on this forum but here is the auction page, the photo is rubbish which is probably why there was only one other bidder:
http://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/aucti ... b5010536e2
It also cost a bit more than I rememebered be £280 plus buyers premium and VAT but still a good deal at around £350.
Cheers, Steve
