A hobby, or a way of life?

Post by MTA » Fri Oct 17, 2008 10:08 pm

During a talk I did on the Guinness loco I am restoring at Amberley, one of the guys watching asked the question:

Do you see this as a hobby, or as a way of life?

I answered the latter, as I am too involved with railways in general for it to be classified as a hobby.

Plus, when I work on my Live Steam locos I see it more as a practice in engineering rather than fixing what some might call a toy...

So, what would be your answer to the question?

A hobby.

Photography is a slightly different matter as I consider that my main hobby, but even then I think I would still answer hobby. :?

What is my way of life? Dunno really, guess that would be family, or faith. Rather a deep question!

I would like my way of life to be "simple", but humans are good at complicating everything.

I really shouldn't post on forums after a couple of drinks on a friday night!

I'd say hobby- a hobby I've had a long time and one I hope to stick with for a lot longer, but a hobby nonetheless.

I'm not involved with any real railways at all though, other than as an occasional visitor.

Id say it is a way of life because of 3 very meaningfull and complex reasons.
1. The democratic organisation of all things enginnered in a coplex and perculiar fashion..............Oh no ive gone cross eyed.

Way of life for me. I've been interested in railways for as long as I can remember, so I can't really imagine life without them...
