North Yorkshire Moors 50th anniversary gala
North Yorkshire Moors 50th anniversary gala
this weekend the North Yorkshire Moors Railway's holding a gala to celebrate 50 years since the line was closed by BR. I decided to take a break from university and head down for a day. got into Grosmont for just after 8 in the morning, and had a cracking day. I took my camera with me, and by the end of the day, I'd got 170 photos, and 5 videos (and gone through two sets of batteries). I'll put the videos onto YouTube later, but here are some of the photos I took.
here's a link to my Photobucket gallery where the rest of the photos are.

if your ever in the north of England, I seriously recommend a visit. the guys have done a fantastic job restoring the line, and the countryside the line runs through is great.kandnwlr:108879 wrote:To my shame - but in my defence I´ve been living in Yurp for 30 years - I didn´t know this railway. Looks like fun. I like the idea of being able to go to Whitby.

Thanks for sharing, Matt.
I had planned to visit, as the K1 and K4 are a great pairing, but I am holding out for the first weekend of the Spring steam gala in a little over a month's time.
The NYMR is my all time favourite preserved line. On my first visit in the late 90's I remember standing on a deserted Pickering platform in the pitch black waiting for the pie and mash train to arrive. The S160 appearing out of the darkness was and is an unforgettable experience; travelling on it more so as none of the electric lighting was working on the train so negotiating the moonlit Moors with the roar of the engine and its unmistakeable whistle was spine tingling.
