The West Clare Cars were not a complete success. I suspect they were a little small for the task in hand - mainly the Kilkee-Kilrush shuttle. However, they lasted from 1928 to 1936 before being stored, so that cannot have been THAT bad.
SNCV in Belgium had an interesting race of metre gauge autorails, and autorail tracteurs to operate their system from the late 1930s onwards. The interesting part of the design is that the engine was offset to one side so that it did not interfere so much with the passenger compartment. It looks like the unballasted version could manage one or two four wheel trailers, and the ballasted version was capable of hauling a short goods train!
Shades of the UTA MPDs and the locomotive-less railway in Ulster!

A first pic of the railbus body is now online, and Rob requests those who would like one from the first batch to register their interest. An unpowered trailer will also be available

Ooooh, that's nice! Like the BR 4-wheel railbuses, with more than a little Faller thrown in, mmmmm... It's tempting, very tempting...
