Lettering on wagons

Wondering what people use to add lettering onto coal wagons and the like?

Tried decals but wasn't happy with the outcome (the wagons are wooden IP engineering ones). Thought about some letter stamps, but wondered what others have done?

I've always painted mine on freehand, they're unique (even among themselves no two are the same style or even size!) and it's one way to add a 'signature' to your stock.

When I wanted lettering for my wagons I looked for something like Letraset but found nothing suitable. Suggestions from other Forum members included home printing, which might work, except I wanted white, which is more difficult to produce!
In the end I went to a local printing company and had a sheet of laser cut letters made which were very thin, white and self adhesive. They are thin enough to show graining in the plasticard and can be weathered to tone down so they look aged.
A whole A4 sheet only cost me £12.00 and give enough for at least 15 wagons (both sides).
You could add shading if you have a steady hand!

I used to use DecaDry rub down transfers. Quite a variety of fonts, sizes etc. Find it difficult to source them these days though.

I agree with Tony W and have noted a list of local printers to check out tomorrow, with a bit of luck.

I've gone for the hand painted option. Found a letters stencil in my daughters pencil case and so pencilled the words on first as a guide and then painted over using humbrol paints.

Looks ok so far, will post up some pics when its finished.
