What Rik asked, and could you give a little more detail on the 'papering' process please? (adhesive used, paper type) It's clearly not wood chip or anaglypta

Re: Yet another project - sorry
Papering is done with Canford craft paper, it's quite thick (https://www.londongraphics.co.uk/daler- ... 1kEALw_wcB)
Wood Glue (PVA) is applied to the model, after a minor rub down to remove any protruding parts and the the paper is applied with a Paper Creaser Bone (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Creaser-Folder ... 0399&psc=1). The paper is trimmed with a razor blade to ensure sharp crisp edges,
Rivets are added after primer. I currently use self adhesive nail gems, but they are rather large for scale. The ones I will be using in the future are smaller and applied with a drop of PVA every 5mm.
Then just paint as per usual, either hand painted or spray.
I think I mentioned this process in a previous post on the Secondus project. https://gardenrails.org/forum/viewtopic ... t=secundus
Any further questions please ask away

Ah, thank you Steve - I actually hadn't seen that thread. You'll have to stop being so prolific. And I'm ashamed to see that Philip beat me to a wallpaper joke-steves- wrote: ↑Thu Mar 17, 2022 5:53 pm

Re: Yet another project - sorry
What are you planning to use Steve? My current nail gem supply are a little on the large side - they look fine individually, but too big when used close together to recreate prototype rivet patterns. At least I'll have something juicy to discuss at my next Rivet Counters Anonymous meeting...

Re: Yet another project - sorry
A little more detailing done today, still loads to do including the lining and name plates, but all in good time
Tiny little lubricator with 2 hand wheels, but I think it looks the part.
Sorry about the really bad picture but it shows the bad painting on the other little detail parts, all in resin of course.

Hi Steve
Just out of interest, are the wheels filament printed? How much of the chassis/mechanism is printed?

Hi Rik
A brief brief run do, most things are 3D printed including the wheels and cranks.
Things not 3D printed are as follows as best I can remember:
Motor
Nylon gears
Silver steel axles
Brass axle bushes
Brass washers
Steel bolts for cranks, crossheads etc.
Piston rods 2mm piano wire
Brass sleeves inside pistons for above
I think that about covers it, everything else either from FDM printer or resin printer, depending on detail required.

Do you have to turn the wheels on a lathe after printing or are they usable straight off the printer?

Re: Yet another project - sorry
Thats what I was wondering as well. I find that the wheels print circular enough, both resin and filament, but getting the axle bore to print accurately is next to impossible and trying to drill/ream/file by hand is highly unsatisfactory.

Re: Yet another project - sorry
I use a 3mm axle and use a 3.1mm hole through the wheel in CAD. As things always change size on printers, I have found this to be ideal and a 3mm hand drill bit just takes off a tiny amount, not enough to make it run un-true and 9 times out of 10 leaves me with a perfect running wheel. I have found that even some manufactures of wheels, you still get one with a wobble now and again, so I am happy enough with a minor wobble if it happens, if it's too bad I just print another wheel.

Re: Yet another project - sorry
Thanks Steve, thats virtually exactly what I do (try to do) even as far as using the 3.1mm bore to allow for distortion, but try as I may I cannot get them to run true with using the 3mm handdrill. I had a clear up this morning and threw out 15 unsatisfactory wheels from my last two projects and I know I've already chucked some more along the way.
