3D printed Welsh wagons

Post by Red Star » Mon Dec 27, 2021 11:47 am

Been playing around with a few designs for small 3D printed wagons for a bit now, and thought I'd showcase these. The stls are in the files section for anyone wanting to have a go at them.

The 2 ton slate wagon stemmed from the local group trying to run long slate trains behind one members double Fairlie, and so I thought that I could help to further increase the number of slate wagons available for this. Based off of pictures (of which there are fortunately lots of available online for FR slate wagons :D ), and designed for using 50mm axles. This worked out similar in size to the Coopercraft model which I subsequently dug out to compare it with. Then for something different I tried a 3 ton slate wagon - again plenty of pictures available on the interweb, though the model doesn't look quite right so will need to revisit the drawings sometime and tinker with them. Following in the same style as the Coopercraft Croesor tramway wagon (which looks to be derived from the slate wagon parts) a drawing was done for this, based off of images of the wagons at the National Slate Museum and at the WHHR.

More recently I've done a Corris style iron bodied wagon, as having done the Croesor tramway wagon I rather liked the rivetted bodywork. Having dumb buffers though this has given a few issues when running with other but they work quite nicely with the Harecroft Birkhill tubs

Very nice! I particularly like the Corris one with the dumb buffers - and Croesor wagons must be like buses, in that you wait years for one and then three turn up at once! Yours look to be a lot more accurate than the Coopercraft ones.

All the best,

Andrew

PS, just noticed the little slate embankment your wagon is posed on - very nicely done!

Thanks Andrew,

I did notice that, and wondered if the timing was a bit awkward? They look more accurate , but in reality it's just the same dimensions as the slate wagon  Mind you, if you need more Croesor wagons in future you can print a fleet :P

The embankment was based on an idea in 16mm today, where someone had built up a retaining wall of slate chippings then poured concrete behind once they were set in place to give a solid base for track laying

Now finished a dandy wagon - this uses some parts drawn by Trevor Thompson from the files section. I stitched the front (horse head) end and side stls together to print as one piece, but drew up a new chassis as I preferred to use a one piece chassis as on the slate wagons (no risk of axleboxes falling off whilst running!). Need to start adding weights underneath these wagons as they're a bit light for being pushed by locos.

It looks really smart. Good to see 3D files being used and adapted.
