Bagnall 284

Post by -steves- » Sun Jun 13, 2021 9:22 am

A friend of mine asked me to make him a Bagnall 284 which is quite a small loco.

I produced the CAD work and he is more than pleased with the result

Lovely drawing, well done, he should be happy.
However the real challenge will be to get all the hardware inside that!

You are not wrong. Even a small 280 motor was tough to get in there and I had to bend the electrical connector lugs down so it fitted, the motor is located in the middle of the water tanks so is well hidden away. I managed to squeeze in a 2 cell 14500 pack (so 3.7v each giving me 7.4v {AA size}) in the boiler as well as an RX65c and I think I have enough room left for a switch, but I am not 100% sure how or where I am going to fit that yet. Suffice to say it's "compact and bijou" in there :D

I'll bet that's another superb model Steve. You really have the hang of the design process, let alone the printing!

This is how it looks straight from the printer, no filing, trimming, no sanding or paint, no brim or raft, just literally remove from base of printer and put together with about 5 small drops of superglue to hold some bits in place. Most of it is either press/push fit and 5 bolts including the motor bolts. The second picture is what I was working from, and no it wasn't to scale I have to work that bit out, lol.

I could have put the boiler bands on, but they can look a bit messy when printed so I will just add something once painted. The guy I designed it for papers all his models so wouldn't want it on there anyway. The pipework will be made from various bits of metal to what ever degree he chooses

I very much like the look off this! I think I know who it may be for, and if so, I’m very much looking forward to what he does with it!
Thanks

The dome was mainly done in Fusion 360 (the free one for personal use) following MetalMunchers video again that he kindly supplied for the last dome I wanted to do. I did cheat and do the main dome in Fusion, but the bit on the top was added using Tinkercad, lol :D

If it’s the chap I’m thinking of, DW.

Thanks Philip

Just have to print another "revised one" and see if that goes together even easier with some modifications to the CAD work yesterday. The big test it alwats to pass it onto someone else to see how they get on with it and yes, I do have enough volunteers, lol
