Trevor Thompson wrote: Tue Mar 02, 2021 8:45 pm I see what you mean about the rivets. Perhaps I over emphasise the rivets. Scaling effects are interesting. I think some things have to be over scale to have the expected impact. I make my rivets 1mm diameter and 1mm high - just laziness really.

Trevor
Not that I am a rivet counter, but there are actually less rivets on mine than the real one, they are really small and close on the real one.

Close up they look pretty much better, the 2nd picture is one of the ones I am working from.

I tend to make rivets at about 1 x 1 as well. Any smaller and neither Sketchup nor my printer like them!

I tend to use the dome shape in TinkerCAD. My default value is 1.5mm dia which gives 0.75mm height

Well I managed to get a bit of movement on the chassis. :woo

I should add that there is no glue yet on any of this, things are just pushed into place with a few bolts here and there, enough to hold it together "just" as it's still all ongoing work.

Yes, I am aware of the wobbly wheels which have since been redesigned and I am also aware of the wobbly gear which I hand drilled as I couldn't be bothered to go to the shed and put it in the lathe, lol

I know a couple of people were hoping this might make it a bit further than just a CAD drawing, well it has. Still a mega amount to do, nothing is glued in place and half the bits aren't even on it, it's just to give an idea of what is likely to look like further down the line, so to speak.

The CAD work has been difficult as I only have photos to base it on and as you would expect not every part fitted every other part, things like the boiler and the smoke box have had umpteen generations and I am still not happy with the smoke box by a long way. Even the cab started as one piece, then ended up as one piece but with a removable roof and in the end I had to split it in to two pieces so I could get at everything, I reckon I have binned around two complete rolls of PLA in the process

Main problem being this isn't for me, it's for my step father, so I still have one to do for me afterwards, lol.

Wot David and Rik said!
That motion is lovely and smooth as well.

Some while ago I did occur to me to have a go at a Fairlie but then I decided my drawing skills probably weren't up to it. Now I'm glad I didn't show myself up!

Thank you for everyone's very kind words, they really are appreciated.

Yes the wheels are printed Rik. Things not printed are, 4mm axles, gears, motor, cross slide bars, fake piston rod, brass insert for piston rod, nuts and bolts, all bushes. It has bushes in every moving part.

I am glad people are liking it so far

Started to add the first layers of paint and think it's starting to look like it is something rather than just a lump of 3D printed plastic, lol.

Progress has been exceptionally slow on this due to my father in law passing away, arranging the funeral, having to clear a house for the mother in law, as well as the garden and garage, that tied with laying 3.2 tonnes of concrete in my own garden and rearranging all the sheds as one needs replacing somewhat urgently. Anyway I digress.

Here it is with a couple of coats of paint, no sandpots, windows or anything yet, but it is very very slowly getting there.

I would point out that it will not be lined as I have no idea how to do it despite owning, but never using a lining pen for the last 10 years, lol.

Blimey, Steve. Sounds like you've got an awful lot on your plate!! Please pass on my condolences to your wife and mum in law.

The loco is coming along nicely. In effect, you're building two locos at once, so given everything else, your progress is lvery impressive, especially when you consider this is a scratchbuild.

It's gonna look great when it's done.

A simple way to add lining is to use self adhesive lining tape, which is a continuous strip of coloured plastic, available in various widths on the same backing sheet and in a wide range of colours......

Quite honestly, that's not even the half it, but thank you for your kind wishes.

To say I have been busy over the last month just doesn't even come close, I have not printed anything in 2 weeks, what is this world coming to, lol :D
