Secundus

Post by -steves- » Fri Feb 12, 2021 5:31 pm

I have been spending a little time here and there trying to do the CAD for for a little loco that ran on 2'8" track. It's something I was asked to do by a friend of mine and all going well within a couple of weeks I think I should have something that works. It was a bit of a pain to do as it is an 0-6-0 with 3' (40mm) between centres with no obvious place for a standard motor. The best I came up with was to put a hole in the base of the boiler and let the motor go up into it, we shall see how it all turns out once I start to print it over the coming week or so.

All I can say is all you folks that do CAD and 3d printing are absolutely amazing. Your projects are real treat to follow. Thanks so much for sharing.

Interesting, looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
Can't say I'm keen on the livery though.

Fascinating. At first I thought, what an interesting tapered boiler - and then I looked at the second image and saw the taper appears to be going the other way.

I thought it bright and colourful, enough to cheer up any old line ;)

I still have the cow catchers to do in CAD, looking forward to that

Below is a picture of the real thing. It originally never had a cab, that was a later add on.

That's Tinkercad for you, sorry, but it's just a straight boiler :D

The CAD work isn't as bad as you might think. I have only started doing CAD work for about 6 months, no training, just picked it up and went for it, the same as Rik did. We both use a VERY easy program called Tinkercad, it's online and it's free. It was designed for children to pick up, well it's also fairly easy for adults to pick up too. Sometimes it takes some working out how to get what you want, but we seem to get there in some sort of fashion or another.

We don't just work in 3D and CAD, we also love our wood and metal bashing too, it just adds other option for us.

I support Steve's comments about TinkerCAD - it may be basic in concept, but it's quite powerful when it comes to creating some of the finer details - such as the leaf springs on Steve's loco or the backhead detail. It's really surprising what can be achieved with a few basic shapes.

Bit of an update on this. This is the final CAD work done and it has already started to be printed. As and when I get the time I shall build it and post up some pictures.

Main chassis has now been printed and papered, yes papered. A good friend of mine papers all his 3d models before he paints them and credit due, they don't look like 3d printed models as the finish is perfect. He showed me how best to do this and I had a go on the main chassis today (whilst chasing our hosting company all day) and the result is pretty good. I will post up some pictures tomorrow.

More to come on this.

Intriguing. Can't wait to see the results.

PS - Thanks for getting the host to sort out the problem - it was very disconcerting to have posts disappearing into the ether...... :?

I find it difficult to get the dado rail in without fouling the brakegear, and choosing the best floral pattern can be a bit of a problem.

I did say a couple of pictures today and here they are. Once painted you will just never know it's been papered, well if I can do as well as my friend does. Lol.

Any blemishes you see in the pictures will soon sand out but a lot easier than trying to get rid of print striations.

The paper and glue I was recommended was Daler Rowney, Canford paper, 150 gsm. The glue is Evostik wood glue, weatherproof. It is actually giving very very good results, quite pleased so far.

And here is some parts of the boiler papered too. Ignore all the white glue splats, they sand off very very easily.

Just a quick update on this. Though various reasons, I have not completed my Secundus yet, but I did get my papered chassis taken from me by my step father for his. He has built his and I gave it a lick of grim matt black as the original was. Ignore all the crap on the desk too, a tidy desk isn't a work in progress desk, lol. I have about 20 projects on the go at the moment so things are getting a little messy.

I will confess that my wife did the weathering and I just did the black and brown underneath. She is quite a dab hand as that took her about half an hour, if not less to do
