3D Printed LKM NS2f

Post by -steves- » Mon Oct 26, 2020 11:37 am

Recently I have been working on the CAD work to produce myself an LKM NS2f. Well with all the parts complete, the kit put together, painted and made into RC, I had the opportunity to grab a few pictures of it. Almost everything is 3D printed by me, the driver, wheels, cranks, con rods, body, cab, lights etc. The axles are 3mm Stainless Steel with brass bushings with the axles milled at each end to give an easy quartering setup. LED's came from a ring of LED lights, gears, no idea, just some I had laying around, I actually wish I knew where to get these so if you know, please share :) Deltang RC and an MFA 5 pole motor.

I am aware the electrics are untidy at the moment and absolutely zero work was done to the 3D prints, they were printed and sprayed, hence so many lines.

That looks great, a bit of a change of direction, from your metal chassis/bodies.

I cant see the pictures on here, glad you can.

It was just a little project for me, I will still be doing the metal chassis once I get back in the shed

I CAN see the photos, and it looks good to me, and a good example of what can be achieved with a 3D printer 8)

I have had no probs seeing the pictures on this thread, so whatever the issue is it seems to be selective.

I have a problem too, after a short delay all I get is a row of boxes and the word 'image'.
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?

That's what I get on my Android tablet but on my Windows 10 laptop I can see the images with no problem. I'm using Chrome on the tablet and Firefox on the laptop. Maybe that's the issue??

Looks like Chrome is the culprit. I've just accessed the thread with Firefox on my tablet and the images are there. I wonder why Chrome is blocking them?

Great looking loco, Steve - after all those shenanigans! Did you use sketchup?

That is a nice looking loco. Quite interested in the jackshaft and cranks, did you end up with any tight spots that needed attention or did everything just fit right off the printer? I've not attempted a loco with con rods, but looking at this I think I am inspired to incorporate con rods on the next one.

You mentioned you were looking for a source of gears, this place has quite a selection: https://www.technobotsonline.com/gears- ... ckets.html
Quite cheap too, you can get a 10pk worms and 10pk plastic gears for £2.61. 50 3mm shafts for £6.55. 10 MFA RE-280 motors for £15.48. Total £24.64, or £2.46/chassis. Combine that with a 3D printer and you have a recipe for more locos than you can fit in your shed. :) R/C ends up being the most costly part...

Also, the pictures don't show up properly here either. I think its because the forum is using HTTPS and the pictures are served without HTTPS, and Chrome doesn't like that for security reasons. Your image host doesn't seem to support HTTPS.

Just discovered in Chrome on my tablet that if I hold my finger on the image icon until the menu pops up (equivalent to right clicking, maybe), it offers me the option to open the image in a new tab, which it does. Strange it won't open the embedded image.

Well I am glad most people can see it now, never had a problem with pictures before. I did change the DNS record just before posting so it should have taken no longer than 24 h9urs to fix itself, I dunno, lol :D

The con rods were a little tight in places, but a small fettle with a 2mm drill bit soon sorted that out. The quartering method is built into the axles and the cranks, it worked very well indeed and I had no idea if it would work, hence not posting anything about it until it was finished and I was confident it worked as expected.

P.S. Thanks for the link I have ordered some to try  :thumbleft:

Hi Rik. Glad you eventually got to view the pictures. I used Tinkercad for all the CAD work, takes some doing and is quite restrictive, but very very easy to use compared to any of the proper CAD programs. :D

Yay! Three cheers for TinkerCAD

A Southwold Railway early closed van.

Like most of my modelling, the detailing is representative rather than perfect scaling, but I know it will print without the need for further tweaking.
