Peter Jones Loco Works #7 Mamod WD 0-6-0 IRENE

A very popular starting point for Live Steam. With their low cost comes a number of problems which can be discussed here

Great video Peter.

Initially I thought the loco was suffering from some tight curves in it's first run, but the 2nd runs shows that it is probably just telling you your paving is not exactly level.

Does prove that the Bix burner works well in these Mamod type locomotives. Will be interesting to see how the performance of the RWM box burner will compare.

Thanks Chris :D

Yes I agree - the Bix burners are excellent. I am using a large RWM gas tank on this loco but with a Bix burner.

I have the RWM box burner to try out on the next build - so far I have set it up with a No5 jet and it appears to give a nice blue flame so will have to wait and see if it is efficient as the Bix.

Another very nice loco, congratulations!

Did you consider replacing the boiler with a centre flue type in one of your modified Mamods?

Now there is a challenge! I have thought about it but continue to take the simpler route and keep with the pot boiler :)

A centre flue boiler has already been done - It is an impressive piece of engineering but the flame keeps going out.

A centre flue boiler has just recently been discussed on another topic - http://gardenrails.myfreeforum.org/ftopic6486-105.php

If you are sticking with the proportions of an Mamod SL/MSS locomotive as Peter has done then you are limited to the small diameter of a boiler that fits the smoke box casting. Thus a centre flue would seriously reduce the total water capacity. I am unaware of any commercial after market centre flue boilers being made for the Mamod SL locomotive, and the external fired meths & gas locomotives seem to be quite happy producing up to 60 PSI for the "super power" Mamod SL/MSS's.

I would also be a bit concerned about the hot gases from a centre flue going through the mazak cast chimney.

Afraid not Kno3 :) A good friend of mine did - he also built it to Mamod/Jane boiler proportions IIRC.
