Mamod with Janet boiler

Post by Richie » Wed Apr 29, 2020 1:18 pm

Hello all, greatings from South East Ireland. This is my first time post here so a brief intro, A year ago my Father found an old but brand new Mamod SL1 in the loft which he asked if I could sell on a well known auction site. Curiosity got the better of me and before listing it for sale I "had" to see if it worked. One year later it is now transformed with most parts from a Roy Wood Janet loco into what you see here. My background is an intereest in punk rock, mountain biking and 5th scale rc cars so as you can imagine there was no one more surprised than me with my new found passion. Lots of drilling, filing, cutting and painting along with a few frustrating moments has made the last 12 months most enjoyable. I even crafted a fake brake handle on the lubricator from an old bicycle spoke ! I hope you like my little Mamod/Janet. Any questions please ask away. Thanks for reading this, regards Richie.

Very smart. I like the stylish handrails along the top of the side tanks. I must do something to get my old mamod working again. Its a fine line though, if I get too carried away I might as well buy a Janet!

Thank you, thats very kind.
To be honest with a lot if not most of the Janet parts and cosmetic extras I'm pretty close to the cost of a Janet, however, the fun and experience I've had converting and upgrading this little loco I would not have got from an off the shelf purchase.
Thankfully it cost me nothing to begin with.
Something worth noting is that as the Janet boiler is slightly longer as it extends into the cab by a few extra millimeters and is made from a thicker brass the Dreamsteam burner struggles to heat it and raise steam unless a butane/propane mix of gas is used, the burner Roy supplies in Janet is a few mm longer and wider to account for this.
Happy steaming.

Bicycle spokes are very useful for all sorts of projects in 16mm scale (fencing, for example).

Richie, hello from a fellow punk rock and mountain biking enthusiast! It’s funny, as my group of like minded friends have turned mid-30’s a few of us have ‘come out’ as being into small trains! Mamod looks ace

Wow , I know the old Sandy Hill BMX track from my days there in the mid 80's, its no longer there now so I believe.

Strangley enough I've raced cruiser class over 40's the last 2 years here in Ireland in the National points series just for laughs !

Not sure how we got onto BMX from Mamods ?

Happy steaming
