Mamod Related Resources

Post by doublereefed » Sun Jan 29, 2017 2:53 am

Folks,

I'm working on upgrading a Mamod and redoing and IP Jane. This forum (search!) has been a great resource.

Are this a complete list of who current offers Mamod, MSS, Jane and Janet products?:

Mamod.co.uk
MSS
Ministeam
Roy Wood Models
Dreamsteam (BEST SOURCE FOR UPGRADES?)
CJW Steam

Thanks for any pointers you can provide to other sites.

-Richard

Also keep an eye on the 16mm Mamod and Oscillator Locos group on Facebook as bits and pieces are sometimes on offer there.

Rpy Wood Models is best for your Jane/Janet/ Mamod SL upgrade items. :)

Hi Richard - The original Mamod Railway System was produced by Mamod between 1980 and 1989 and then were made by MSS from 1994 onwards. So if you have an older Mamod from the SL range then these are not supported by Mamod anymore. Mamod do have their own new range of loco's but these are quite different from the Mamod Railway System of the 1980's.

An excellent source for spares for the 'old' range of loco's is http://www.dreamsteam.co.uk/mss-mamod-l ... parts.html who also can supply some upgrade parts for the SL and these are generally compatible with the IP Jane http://www.dreamsteam.co.uk/mss-mamod-u ... parts.html

You can also get SL compatible spares and MSS spares direct from MSS http://www.steammodels.com/MSS_Spare/Locomotive_spares

I have no experience with Ministeam

Roy Wood has always been very helpful to me when providing spares and upgrade parts and as he is the current manufacturer and supplier of the superb Janet loco then he is the go-to person for things like components that are also compatible with the older IP Jane.

I am not sure what parts CJW Steam currently make for the Mamod loco range but I have bought from them in the past for other models and they are an excellent supplier of aftermarket / upgrade components.

So your list pretty much covers the current list of active suppliers - other than ebay of course which can also be a good source of parts.

You could also try here http://www.manormodelsrailway.co.uk/ again I have used Manor for numerous purchases and they are very reliable and offer good quality products.

It is also worth you looking at the wonderful collection of documents relating to the Mamod Locomotive and its derivatives, MSS Jane & Janet etc being hosted by David Hippey of Houstoun Gate Locomotive Works http://www.eagleassist.com/hglw/mamod.html

Who makes the preferred choice of wheels currently? Does anyone make steel wheels that look like the originals? I'm not a big fan of the disk wheels or spoked ones I've seen so far...

I'm not aware of any other wheel suppliers anywhere that do Mamod wheel sets. Disc wheels are no longer supplied by Dream Steam - they now do a type with round holes called vented wheels http://www.dreamsteam.co.uk/mss-mamod-u ... SW32V.html

As well as the spoked wheels, Roy Wood also does steel wheels and I think he does them as plain or vented.

I make inserts to press into the old DS supplied wheels to make them look half decent :)

Superbiker, thank you for the confirmation, and thank you for the link to the eagle assist web site. That is one I hadn't come across yet... great archival as well as instantly useful information.

Thanks again,

-Richard
