OK so Healy's Mill with the new wheel doesn't look much different to the old one.

But the difference is "what's under the bonnet" as the car salesman said.
It's always bugged me that the wheel, although turning slowly didn't look like it was doing any work. It's hard to explain
and perhaps I'm a little pedantic! So I foraged around in past made junk to find some iron pedestal bushes, bored a hole in
the central wall, and mounted a second shaft above the wheel shaft. The flywheel already on the wheel shaft was a 112 tooth
7"diam. Boston gear, and a 16 tooth Boston with a roller clutch in it fitted to the second shaft gave me another flywheel
running 7 times faster than the wheel.

I've watched many British mill videos, and one of Calbourne Mill has a sign saying it ran at 6 rpm. for a 20ft. wheel. Mine
is 18ft. and while 6 rpm in model form looks too slow, the wheel now runs at 12 rpm all day and looks truly hydraulic in
it's action :D :D

Clever stuff Grant and beautifully engineered. Just like the grace of a swan which looks serene above the surface but with all the manic paddling going on beneath.
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?

That is a shame Grant, it would be lovely to see and hear it in action. We'll have to persuade your local TV station to come round and do 'a piece' on the LNR

OK I'll let the secret out.
Pam and I did shoot some video using Pam's phone (very good pics.I have to admit) The sun was so bright I couldn't see the screen, so I got the old dirty sheet I cover the lathe with, and put that over my head with Pam holding it visor like out the front clear of the lense. Neither of us realized audio was being recorded (we're new at this) so between me calling Pam to move forward the suns coming in, and then asking "how do you stop it" (Pam didn't know!) and various other things you can't hear the gurgling water or anything else. A better video might have been taken of us shooting the video
And so endeth my video experience.
Grant.
PS I said much earlier on "you don't have to be mad, but it helps".

What wonderful photos, the line's looking great...

Loads of inspirational stuff there - in particular I'm inspired to think about creating some telegraph poles...

All the best,

Andrew.

Hi Andrew,
I bought a set of Bachmann telegraph poles which each have about 4 crossbars per pole. Carefully removed the crossbars sacrificing the pole if anything. and attach to wooden tapered poles. Only used one per pole, gave me enough for the whole railway with spares.

Wish my line looked as good as that at the end of winter, it rarely looks that good at the end of summer! Good to have you back again, I did think you'd been quiet of late.
