That is such a shame as we all enjoyed the build process so much, and it does look wonderful, but we have to take the exterior conditions into account. The climate here is such that we have to find alternative materials which will have a life expectancy of more than eight weeks. I would certainly be most upset if my efforts lasted such a short time. At least you have the pictures and the experience to look back on. Better luck with mark 2.
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?

Thanks guys. It was always a bit catch 22 in that I didn't think a small build would be a test for the build process. Using foamboard on its own wasn't so good either needing a lot of reinforcement. Tempted to make it a corrugated shed to salvage something. Tis only a toy! :D

Still experimenting with video....30 seconds of nothing much :D

Rewatching that I still need some practice and a sound card!

I agree with Ian, that is a lovely little clip.

Get yourself a cheap tripod off eBay that clamps around your phone.

We'll you never know when it's going to strike but a few days in Cornwall has caused the 4mm bug to resurface. Experimenting with dcc and sound at my age!

The sunny weather has made the garden railway look inviting so had a tidy of the overgrown waterside station area. Joe on the wagon was kind of relieved we finished before opening time.

Must try and balance the railway time.

I do miss all the benefits of DCC but I couldn't go back to the smaller scales (prices for a start are ridiculous).

You have a busy garden there full of plants, I like it.

It's busy alright, the top picture has a six foot skinny bramble growing across the track. The upper track is lost under the crazy nasturtiums

I can only ever see a 4mm layout being a 4 x 1 foot micro affair. Cheaper on locos! The loco I got is missing a buffer and a window so at £130 seemed a cheap entry into sound. Nephew provided a free controller.

Looks great to me Derek. I couldn’t go back to N gauge again, it did cost me a lot of money and that’s when I was working, in excess of £3000 to do my L shaped 8 x 10 x 3 layout. I got rid of most of it this year before our move. I do still have some loco’s and rolling stock, most of them are still in the boxes. I will get rid of them when I can get around to it.

I still love your line though Derek, it does give me ideas and inspiration.

Lovely narrow gauge atmosphere - and I'm glad Joe got to the pub!

I'm about to flog a load of OO stuff from the 80s - it's not worth much any more, but it takes up a lot of space! It's BR Western Region stuff - one day I'd still like to build a 4mm scale model based on the Cambrian system in BR days (Dukedogs, Manors, Standard 4s, lovely scenery, the Cambrian Coast Express, what's not to like?) but if I ever do it (probably pretty unlikely...) I'll use modern equipment...

Thanks for the photos,

Andrew.

Andrew, take a look at the Ellesmere thread on RMweb. It will be at the NEC Warley this year where I'll be helping out. If you get round to doing the Cambrian then I can put you in touch with Phil.

Like others have commented, I too have dabbled in other gauges. 4mm in my case and yes, I still have it all. Sadly since all the super detailed models came onto the market all worth very little now. Just sentimental value. I don't hanker after 4mm any more though. I do still undertake commissions now and again. Mainly for Phil and his Ellesmere layout.

Thanks Ian - Ellesmere's marvellous!

If I do ever get round to it it'll be many years from now, when the children have left home! I've always fancied building a version of Aberystwyth, complete with the VoR in 009, but even heavily condensed it would take a very large room! Lovely prototype though - attractive buildings and backdrop, the shed, two different routes diverging at the platform-end, the narrow gauge element, a short named express for a bit of glamour... On day...

Cheers,

Andrew.

I've still got hornby vdas and lima hoppers from the 80s in the attic, I even started upgraded to bachmann 37s before the garden bug but even they are dated now. 4 points in 4 square feet will do me nicely.

Perhaps my self destructing loco shed hit me harder than I thought......
