Time to build a railway...but where?
Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Peter, where did you source those wonderful bonnets and wheelarches from?
Thanks,

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Phil, I have had these for some years now waiting for inspiration to strike. They are moulded plastic and came from ebay (naturally) and were originally Rolls Royce open tourers built as radios, probably in the '70's? The rest of the bodywork was immediately discarded in the certain knowledge I could use them for something else, and after a long gestation period, I have.
In 2017 I made another railbus which incorporated almost identical bonnet and wheelarches, but having a different radiator.
I'm always on the lookout for quirky items which I can convert to railway use.... I really should get out more!

Hmmm...
Could make for a nice version of this, converted from RH&DR co-creator Captain Howey's own Rolls, which he apparently used to drive along the line at 60mph...
Lovely railcar by the way Peter, both original and believable - I'd love to see a film of it running when you've finished it, it'll look great snaking through pointwork...
Andrew.

This is fabulous. I love a railcar, and the quirkier the better. This is really maxing out the quirkiness!Peter Butler wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 6:52 pm Thanks for the comments guys, I think I have teased and confused you just about enough now so more can be revealed...
Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Blimey! He must have had a lot more confidence in his trackwork than I have in mine ......

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
The Doublebus is just about done, as far as construction is concerned. The three sections are connected as described and perform perfectly by holding the passenger section horizontal in relation to the driving cab at one end, also allowing full articulation at the other by the rose bearing. There is sufficient movement for it to negotiate my curves too. So, a success, I think.
I still need to add batteries, switch and receiver under-floor of the carriage, and then it can join the railbus fleet....

It is a thing of beauty, Peter. For some reason it reminds me of a caterpillar - no idea why .....

Now, there's a mechanical challenge ..... to see if your railbus can emulate that motion ....Peter Butler wrote: ↑Thu Jan 27, 2022 6:56 pm Perhaps this might help Rik...

Rik, I might need to pay my passengers to ride that carriage.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
And that reminds me of a very happy coincidence 25-ish years ago when, as a student at Aberystwyth, a friend and I went for a walk on Borth bog and were very taken with some caterpillars we found there, which were lime green, with a darker stripe along the side and a friendly-looking yellow face. Caused to look up from these botanical pursuits by the mournful toot of a passing train, I caught my first glimpse of a class 158 in Central Trains livery - which was exactly the same as the caterpillar:
Anyway, it's a lovely model Peter, congratulations! I know you're not hugely into operating, but a railcar day must be a temptation, with a lovely fleet like that?

Peter, to save me hunting through 2791 posts..
Would you have any other photos of the brown beastie, you could share, please?

Happy to oblige Phil... The locomotive is built from a Bandai traction engine kit of the 1970's, possibly still available at extortionate prices on eBay.
There is a description of some improvements I made to the model on page 156 of my thread, I hope that helps you.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
The latest kit from Jerry Irwin has been delivered and is already well under construction. As usual the build instructions are on Youtube as link below....

As ever, the parts are superbly designed and cut forming a well thought out model which looks just wonderful. Everything you need to complete the wagon is included, metal wheels are available on request (at small extra cost). Mine is 32mm gauge but Jerry will soon offer a 45mm gauge option....

Wow! I wasn't expecting a nearly three hour video showing the complete blow by blow construction. I can see why you really enjoy making Jerry's kits - so thoughtfully and cleverly designed!Peter Butler wrote: ↑Wed Feb 09, 2022 11:36 pm The latest kit from Jerry Irwin has been delivered and is already well under construction.
