Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Just in case anyone wondered what I have been up to during the past couple of weeks, I have concentrated on my passenger stock builds. The initial four compartment carriage from Lineside Hut looked so good (to me) I ordered another set of sides and ends and carried out my intention of cutting the sides in half to make 2, two compartment coaches.....
The interiors have been fitted with the Lineside Hut seating and passengers from a Chinese supplier.....
The four compartment carriage has also been populated.....
The CRV has progressed with all overlays now in place and decals on order to finish off the exterior. I have to say how impressed I have been with the quality of material and the way everything fits perfectly, even if the instructions have been slightly challenging. From the start I had no intention of making any of the doors open (although they can be made to do so) and it has built into a very strong vehicle which looks most convincing......
Currently adding bogies and step to the four comp. then only the roof to add.The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?

Magnificent paint and assembly work, Peter. I've always been an admirer of these types of coachwork with the separate overlays. Yours will be a beautiful passenger set, especially ending in the curly roofed van.

Excellent craftsmanship Peter such beautiful coaches you are modelling. Looking forward to seeing them completed.

Superb models Peter. The paint finish is top quality. Your progress has put me to shame as my W&LLR Brake van has stalled because life has gotten in the way and will do so for a few more days at least .
Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Great looking builds, Peter. That curly roof looks like a challenge.

I thought so too Rik, but the cradle (supplied) and method of build, well described in the instructions, made it simple. If you look back two pages on my thread I have put pictures of the construction. It is designed to be removable, but mine will be permanent.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Hi Rod,
The Chinese supplier of unpainted moulded figures I have used (several times) is 'wehonest' (couldn't make it up!) and the item number in e-bay is... 151063371333. The figures are made to 1:22.5 (G scale) but in the correct location look perfectly well to me..... especially at £9.99 for 15 figures.
Seated figures might be a little short so I have raised the seating inside the carriages. Once the roof is on no one will know.... unless you tell them!

Ah, so that's what that cradle was for ..... I didn't appreciate its significance at the time.Peter Butler wrote: ↑Sun Oct 21, 2018 10:35 amI thought so too Rik, but the cradle (supplied) and method of build, well described in the instructions, made it simple. Those carriages are looking marvellous, well done! The CRV is a beauty, I'm definitely tempted - the new balcony handrail looks great...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Only the roofs to be fitted now so, having found how useful the CRV roof jig was, I decided to make a jig myself.
First a firm, flat base plate was cut from plywood then a thin, flexible plywood strip was glued along its centre line along its length and left to dry. Then two strips of plywood pushed between the two to create a gentle curve to comply with the shape of the end panel...... A HIP framework was cut to the size of the roof space and allowed to set. 1mm HIP sheet cut to the correct size placed on the jig and a weight placed on top to form the curve..... When set it forms a firm roof just needs canvas effect stuck on top and a splash of paint!

Very nice Jig there Peter. What are you going to use for the canvas effect. I have used toilet roll or plain Kitchen roll.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Rod, the material is a fine weave curtain lining which is not too fluffy when painted. I always use HIP to form roofs and lay the material on top with overlaps on all sides. Then brush on loads of solvent to soften the HIP and bond the material to it. Leave to dry then use fine sandpaper on a flat block to trim the edges. A spray coat of primer and finish colour of your choice..... job done!

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Thanks Peter. I did wonder, would you have a photo of a finished roof at all please.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Hi Rod, pictures of an almost finished roof......
The same material was used on my CRV, this time with PVA (on to wood) and a spray with grey primer when dry. The roof should be white so I used a good quality acrylic paint for the finish. Between coats I smoothed the surface with 320 grit Wet & Dry (used dry) which gives a very nice effect of fine texture.
I say almost because I need more vents to fit before permanently attaching the roof to the carriage. The same material was used on my CRV, this time with PVA (on to wood) and a spray with grey primer when dry. Peter,
Double check the roof vents are the right way round. I think they should be turned 90 degrees?

Not really. I just added some to a recently completed rake of coaches so I googled a few pictures of the real thing for reference. Beautiful coaches by the way.Peter Butler wrote: ↑Thu Oct 25, 2018 6:44 pmThank goodness someone knows something about railways!!!!! I just stick 'em on for effect.
