Another addition to the 'heritage train', this time a scratch-built (plasticard) 'Bug Box'.......

The whole train's looking wonderful, it'll be a delight to see that trundling round the garden. I love the CRV (I'm tempted, but I'm almost put off 'cos I'll need to paint mine in plain green to suit my line and time period...) and the little bug box is great. I'm so impressed with how quickly you've made it - I made one a few years ago, my first scratchbuild, and it took me months!

All the best,

Andrew.

As mentioned above, I have two Lineside Hut coach kits to build for a friend but have been delayed by a series of serious nosebleeds. Altogether about 30 in two weeks requiring three A&E visits, one 999 ambulance call-out, treatment and admission to hospital. Hopefully on the mend now but very worrying at the time.
Meanwhile, when not actually bleeding, I have managed to work on the coaches, and here is the progress so far.....

I am still impressed with these kits and will certainly be back for more.

Peter, sorrry to hear of your woes, it sounds most unpleasant in every way. Glad you are on the mend now.

Those coaches look magnificent, I'm particularly taken by the Open.

Excellent work on the coaches Peter, but more importantly I hope you are now fit and well, or at the very least on the road to recovery.

Sorry to hear of the close encounters with the NHS.
The coach looks fantastic.

Those coaches do look marvellous, Peter. Not only the quality of the kits which should take the credit, though.
Hope you're over the trauma of your recent medical emergencies.

Thank you all, I'm really grateful for your kind messages, feeling much better now!
The coaches have had their first test run today and performed exceptionally well. As supplied, they have Roundhouse bogies and wheels, which add weight low down. With the undoubted quality of the product they do their job admirably.......

They look great.

I agree with you about the weight low down being a help to smooth running, especially with bogie vehicles. The first bogie coach I build had plastic bogie frames and plastic wheels, bunny-hopped off the track every chance it got, and disgraced itself by rolling over on sharp curves a time or two. Simply changing over to steel wheels and axles, and gluing some weights underneath made an enormous difference.

I recently purchased two pairs of Swift Sixteen WW1 bogies from a friend who has more projects than time, however, I had no chassis to go with them so looked in one of my favourite books for inspiration....

The illustration at the top of the page is the only reference I have so dimensions etc. are a bit freelance. Also, the box extensions at either end of the wagon have no explanation of their purpose, if anyone has any idea what they were for I would love to know, as someone is bound to ask me!

Very nice! Or rather a very nice model of what can't have been a terribly pleasant vehicle to be around... My guess as to the purpose of those two boxy things is that they were ventilators - open at the rear and bottom to allow air in but not light out. Just a thought...

I may attempt to run a train this weekend - it will be the first in some time, and I think it might be advisable to have an ambulance car on hand. The track isn't in
great shape, and casualties are likely!

Cheers,

Andrew.

PS Not been online for a while so missed your two most recent carriages - absolutely lovely, well done!

Very nice Peter, most unusual.
My guess for the boxes is that they were storage of some kind accessed from inside. There can't have been much spare space internally so maybe they were a kind of luggage rack tacked on the outside and cut through?

I have always suspected they were somewhere to chuck additional supplies of field dressings, and other first aid supplies. Getting stretchers in and out of the wagon would have precluded leaving much on the floor of the wagon. One has to remember that in addition to those they were evacuating there was a constant need to get supplies to the field medics, especially given the numbers of walking wounded the major assaults in the Great War produced.

Absolutely superb again Peter. How the blooming heck do you come up with these ideas...And the building of them and finished product is always 1st class....A master class in how to build in Plasticard......

By the way Peter, how do you get your wood effect on the card. I have tried and it comes out rubbish....

I have a little project that will be revelled soon hopefully.....Depends on how it turns out....
