Time to build a railway...but where?
Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Those are too nice to leave sitting around..they are crying out for wheels and motor!

I agree with Phillip. Looking on the YouTube page it is a fairly simple build, had to smile a little bit when it fell apart, happens to the best too...
Can you get any of the parts needed for the firebox from anywhere.

Very nice!
I've been thinking about making a similar load for my own well wagon - this might be the answer...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Perhaps a sort of half-way compromise would do? I have discovered this video since my first post idea....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VLtyr1 ... pQ&index=6
and there is a lovely image of 'Tom Rolt' on the Talyllyn Railway under development. See at ... 3m32sec. Not quite in running order but at least on its wheels. This would make a more interesting project and an even better looking static model.

I've pushed some of the elements of Philip's second shot, for clarity. No offence Philip.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Thanks guys, I am grateful to you both (also help from Rod) and I have enough information to build a representative boiler/chassis unit from now.
The support of the Forum..... wonderful!

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
The idea of scratch-building a chassis to accompany the Jerry Irwin boiler kit has now been abandoned. The reason behind this decision is because Jerry now offers a kit for the chassis as a separate item. Mine arrived yesterday and the two units are now united.....
.
.
Jerry has Youtube videos of its construction....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHbk03qC4UY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRrDyDEFAxE
.
It is just what I wanted without the trouble of scratch-building and adding all of those rivets. A real beauty and great scenic addition to my railway.

Looks really good that Peter.
Yes, you have saved one heck of a job with all those rivets and it looks great just by the building now. Will be even better when you have done your'e magic on it.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Phil, now I have got the kits, and assembled them as designed, I will continue with the idea of leaving it in incomplete condition as a static loco standing alongside my loco shed, just as in the photographs show above. It will have a rusted appearance as though left outside while other components are prepared in the workshop.
But..... I have already given thought to having a second kit in order to make a completed and operational loco (as if I needed another one!). It would be a great start to any loco build as there is so much detail already done.
That is for another day..... possibly a winter project?

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
The model is now prepared for colour, a primer of red and black as undercoat for me to attempt something for the first time..... using weathering powders.
After seeing the wonderful example which was done for Jerry to promote his kit, I had very helpful advice from Dave Turner who used this method, and with his permission I attach his photographs to show just how good the finished item can look...
I hope I can achieve something similar myself.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
that is a beautifully high standard to aim for , Peter, but I'm sure you will rise to the challenge successfully.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
I am sure you will Peter. You have a talent that is hard to match, knowing you, you will be more than able to achieve what your brilliant eye for detail can do.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Nothing to report on the boiler/chassis yet as I haven't tried working with the weathering powders. I do have an assortment of colours but am currently occupied with another build which also needs the same treatment, so I'll tackle them all at the same time. That will be two of these.....
. Another kit from Jerry Irwin; laser cut MDF chassis parts with axles running in roller bearings, one-piece resin printed body with full rivet detail and lifting eyes, a beautiful model, as usual!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti5Q6YVTT_w&t=10s
.
The first will be used to carry batteries, receiver etc. behind this....
.
.
Which builds into this wonderfully detailed locomotive....

Ooooooohhhhh!
I am liking that, a lot..
What motor do they supply?
And,
What voltage gives you a sensible speed?
My interest is piqued.
